Kids have been the least affected, FYI. He/she should be fine.

That does give me some comfort but given the substandard rate of testing it’s also a potential false positive.

Speaking for myself, I’m less concerned about myself getting sick and more concerned about my young kid. I’m a healthy adult, I’ll be fine.

I understand that. I have 2 little ones myself, but I am no more concerned over this, than I am about the regular flu, some crazy other illness or them getting hit by a car.

I am concerned about my parents. They are in their 80s and relatively active, meaning they go out to stores, restaurants, etc., regularly, but are unprepared. By unprepared I mean I know they will have to go to the store for necessities ... even though I told them they need to watch out for this.

They have made it through every other flu season of their life....including the last 14 COVID viruses....

Loganville Kroger was busy but nothing crazy, one lady had two carts of tp, but everyone else seemed to have carts of normal things. Clorox wipes fully stocked, didn't check hand sanitizer section. Overall less of a shitshow than I expected.

Other than being old, are they on chemo or other meds that weaken their immunity?

The old folks dying here seem to already be on death's door in hospice.

We’re on borrowed time for sure. Work is making plans for us to work from home.

Yeah that's a 0.1% mortality rate while this new flu has a mortality of 3.5% meaning if we took the influenza numbers and added them to the Wuhan mortality rate there would be over a million people dead

I'm not sure of the death rate.

I read that South Korea, the country with mass testing, reports a death rate of 0.6%. That's a lot worse than seasonal flu but less worrying rates I'd read before.

South Korea testing is broad enough to pick up mild cases. We need a lot more testing here.

It’s actually the best comparison. The flu is a virus and spread the same way. COVID-19 is the 4th in the last 20 years, and will do exactly what the last ones did. Can you tell me about your last “SARS” vaccine or “H1N1” vaccine? How about that “bird flu” that was gonna kill you? You still good?

Don’t be a pussy. It’s the same as them all. If you’re gonna be this ignorant, please don’t claim to have a UGA education to others, thanks.

The mortality rate is not that high. Don't be a sheep

I agree with you on the first half there. He's definitely referencing the discrepancy with the denominator in the death rate, which is fair.

The bolded part is where he made a misstep IMO. As I said, I don't think it's the same as what was accused here, but that doesn't make it good either.

Whether it's a recommendation in your mind or not really doesn't matter. It's normalizing what is generally bad advice in the face of any potentially rapid spreading disease. Will people go to work sick? Absolutely... But it is the job of the POTUS to speak from that position of power with respect for the power that it wields. So maybe don't trivialize that poor behavior.

I am not defending his use of words here. I am saying that nowhere did he tell sick people to go to work.

Folks go crazy in grocery stores when schools close bc their kids will eat at home instead of school for a week or two weeks, Some kids get breakfast and lunch from school so that’s a financial strain on their parents who now try and buy all the cheap cans of food.

Grocery stores should start stocking more cans in the back, any where they can bc it’s only a matter of time before each area has enough Covid cases to close schools.

Influenza itself has has a much higher mortality rate.

We have no idea of the actual mortality rate til we begin wide spread testing and I would bet it would be closer to the 1.5% or less.

What?

We had 60 million cases of H1N1 in '09 and got through it.I think we'll get through this.

I have to wonder if you actually understand the term “novel virus”? None of these things is the “flu”. You, I, nor anyone else has any immunity built up to this virus the way you do the flu. Over many years of seasonal flu and many millions of people having been vaccinated for it yearly, there is a certain level of herd immunity built into us. That doesn’t exist with COVID-19.

I’m not arguing that this is some apocalyptic plague; it will likely end the way the rest did. But it does have the potential to hit segments of people much harder than seasonal flu, whose mortality numbers are also inflated. This has been discussed ad nauseam on the OT board.
