Exactly right with regards to the media. Doesn't help that it is a slow time on the year from a sports perspective so they have nothing else to report on. Prior to Sam, they were showing nonstop coverage of the Ok. State guy who pushed a fan around the clock.

It seems to me there is an evolutionary advantage to homosexuality.
Ummmm...you didn't think this one through, did you? If it were evolutionary, that would indicate that it would not only become dominate, but the inferior lifestyle would die out leaving only homosexuals. If there were only homosexuals left, how would the species reproduce itself?

I just don't like gays in football.. don't know how else to say it.. It's taking the pussification of the game to another level.
There have been gays playing football for many, many years.

I can understand that, and blame him not.
You very well could be correct....however, to think he is the first gay guy to play in the NFL would be naive. I have not seen a steady stream of gay players or ex-players being outed by the media....so I'm not sure his reasoning is solid. However, it is his right to let everybody know if he wants to. It took guts to tell everybody....I'm not sure I would. However, I am not sure I would place him squarely in the category of hero, either.

FooManChoo and DawgLife will be along shortly to tell us how Sam is a sinning son of a bitch who deserves to burn in hell for eternity.
And yet neither of us started this thread. Would you prefer we just not express our opinions, as others express theirs? I am used to people that disagree with me to want to silence me while expressing their opinions loudly and openly.
And you call us intolerant of others.

Preach, man, preach

Just because something confers an evolutionary advantage doesn't mean it necessarily has to become the dominant tactic within a species. In fact, many alternative strategies rely on the fact that it is a deviation from the generally used normalcy.

However, over time don't evolutionary advantages normally become the norm?

I'm sure that he doesn't believe that he is, just as I am sure that he considered that there might be some advantages to becoming the first publicly gay man in the NFL. I am sure that he had a rabbi counselling him with his decision tree.
And no one is a hero because of who they frick...unless you are fricking someone that I want and have no chance with. The media feeds, and the masses eat.
The free thinker is rare in the age of mass media.

Very true. It's difficult at best to have an original opinion these days. Whatever you think...someone has already thought it and put it on the internet!

I would say that it's difficult for today's man to arrive at ANY opinion without it being handed to him by someone else with an agenda. What's more, that's the way today's man prefers it. Ingesting information, digesting it logically, and arriving at one's own conclusion is time consuming, and god damn it, I've got stuff to play with.
I don't know...maybe it's always been this way. It probably has been. Those who would control know that information is more powerful than wealth. History is littered with the bodies of mental slaves...

I haven't read this entire thread, but does anyone else think he came out as a ploy to "force" a team to take him earlier in the draft so the NFL doesn't seem prejudiced? I can just see the "ol' commish" going to all the owners behind closed doors and saying " Aww, geez, guys. Someone pick him in the first or second round so the media doesn't make a big deal out of it."
Just the way ESPN and other news outlets have jumped all over this making it a bigger deal than it should be. Maybe his agent putting this spin on it?
What say you?

Exactly, When did sports TV become the leader in the gay rights movement. Run your story and move the fk on. Jason Collins 2.0.

Wasn't he projected to go early anyway? I've not read that far into it myself...
Posted on 2/10/14 at 11:25 pm to HellRaisingDawg
I've read that the earliest would be the 3rd round. Apparently several teams think his stats were padded this past season against some push-overs.

This absolutely should be a non-issue. We should never hear about shite like this. I don't care what anyone's sexual preference is. It is not news. Unfortunately, mass media and the gay/lesbian groups out there seem to think they are fighting a civil rights battle on the same scale African-Americans fought in the 60's and 70's and, that's just not the case. Its one of the least persecuted groups in most of the world that has a self-perception of being more mistreated than were black South Africans under Apartheid.

Sorry. Should have made myself more clear here. For everybody else to think he was the first gay player would be naive. Why all the fuss, is my question? He is a football player. Let him play football. If there are problems caused by him being gay, then that will be worked out by the team. If he is good enough to play and contribute, then the team will make sure he is taken care of in some way...whether it mean private shower or whatever.
