If you want to wait an hour for your hamburger, sure.
"Oh, I'll go when it's slow so I don't have to wait".
You'll still wait an hour.
Every few years I go back, to see if the service has improved, and after all these years, it's still slow as frick. I'm not exaggerating when I say it takes an hour. Even when they are slow. My SIL worked there for a while, she said it's because literally nobody gives a frick, there is no management, no operations or procedures, very little prepwork, total shite show.
But because they are still popular, ownership says who cares, why make improvements or spend effort on better management and procedure etc?

If you want to make the 15 minute drive out to Watkinsville.
Try Chops and Hops.
They have really good wings and a huge craft beer selection.
Try the Oconee Hot or the Dr. Stouts BBQ wings.
They also have a great menu.

Have not heard of them. I'll Def try them out. Thanks for the info!

Gumby's was the only place that didn't even bother checking my shittily made fake id. They always had the 4.99 super large pizza special, but they had some other ridiculous PBR special, like $1 pitchers for happy hour every day, and all the sidewalk locals from the projects in the neighborhood out back would pack the place to play pool and hustle the college kids.
Maybe it was 25 cent pitchers, but charged you a dollar per cup, or something like that.
I forget the specifics, but it was ridiculous. It was basically free beer.

LSU Hobnail.... from Watkinsville....
Do you know the Mettenbergers?
Are you one of them?

No.. No relation to the Mettenbergers. I moved here by choice.
I was born and Raised in Baton Rouge graduated from LSU.
I do live about a mile from where Mettsiah applied his High school craft.
Love living in Oconee county and Athens area. Its a wonderful place to call home.
I was the lone idiot in the LSU shirt and hat behind the bench at the last LSU vs UGA basketball game last year.
With that said I attend all UGA home football games, a season ticket holder of UGA Ice Dawgs - Which open at home tomorrow night. So unless they are playing LSU I am loyal to my home town team.
I will add although my daughter was born in Baton Rouge, she has quickly shunned LSU and has UGA womens basketball and Volleyball schedules/posters hanging in her room, and has several picture of her and Hairy Dog. I think I have lost her to the locals.

Eddie's, DP Dough, Zaxby's, and Barbs all are still good post downtown options.
For the last 10 years or so, I’ve been saying downtown (or somewhere near downtown) needs to add a whataburger. That place would absolutely kill it.

I want to move to Oconee so bad.

That's fast compared to how Herbie's used to run. It could take over an hour for a waitress to get to you.

O'Malley's used to have "Drinkin' with Lincoln" on Sundays - penny pitchers. Fairly sure it was just the runoff from Friday and Saturday night, but it was cheap.

The place needs something unique. Not a fricking whattaburger. Are you trolling me? I feel like im taking crazy pills.
How about we all chip in and create Athens Burger Company LLC.
Hamburgers, fries, chicken fingers, beer.
I got $10k on it.
We need to move fast.

"I want to move to Oconee so bad"
I spent 23 years on and off in the Dallas area (long story), moved here last year...
We are never leaving. We flat out love it here and my family has never felt more at home. This includes Louisiana.
Maybe get a place on Lake Oconee one day after we win the lottery.

We deck the place out with uga paraphernalia, jukebox full of allman brothers, hire high school girls on the registers, ex-cons on work release for the kitchen, and off duty cops working security for late-night.
Social media campaigns, participation in a festival or two, and prime location for driveby name recognition.
It only takes 3 years in Athens to become a “tradition “ because of student turnover.

I can boil crawfish in the spring time. Really make it interesting.
Funny thing I had one last spring and most people had no idea what I was talking about. Kept asking if I was doing a "Low country boil" which I looked at them with an equally confused look.
When I asked Striplings if they had Boudin, they looked at me like "What did you call me"
I have for sure strayed far from the nest.

Maybe not needs, but that place would make $$$. Students would love it as well.
I completely agree with you about Athens needing a good burger place downtown though.

Funny, the first time I ever heard of Boudin was at a little butcher shop on Baxter st, many years ago. I was buying some steaks, and they had Boudin they were upselling. The owners were from New Orleans. It was a great little butcher shop, they didn't last long though.
Anyway, I ended up buying some, and was confused on how I was supposed to eat it. This was probably about ten years ago.

A whattaburger could charge $5 or $6 for a hamburger.
Athens Burger Company (ABC) could charge $8 or $9 for the same burger.
