What makes these statistics more remarkable is that they were created by a roster that is less talented than the one Cheney will be working with at UGA. According to 247sports, the 2012 recruiting class for the Vols was ranked just 20th, the 2011 class was ranked only 14th, and the 2010 class was ranked ninth. By comparison, UGA’s average finish over the past three recruiting classes is seventh.

Nothing ground breaking in here but hopefully with a competent defense, this will be more than enough offense to win games. As time has passed since the announcement, I am less angry with the hire but only time will tell if it was a good move or not

I'm not exactly sure we are more talented than the Tennessee offense was in 2012, potentially I guess.

Here's the CoachingSearch.com data.

Good news from that article is that if Cheney doesn't work out, don't think we'll have any issue with him either jumping ship or being fired. This is his 4th stop in 5 years.

Also think the varying run/pass ratios over the years show that he is at least adaptable to his personnel. I don't think he'll be as good of an OC as Bobo was but he shouldn't have to be if we can get back to having a dominant defense.

This is what I see as being the biggest upside to the hire. Gotta be a good mammal and adapt. It may take a couple of years for Kirby to get the folks in place he wants, so being flexible in the meantime is a plus.

Looking at those stats if I were Eason I would run, not walk, to Florida or Miami.

Just give me competence at OC. I don't care about innovation, just competence and an ability to score points.

If he went on previous stats he wouldn't have wanted to be under Schottenheimer either so I think he is thinking about the talent around him and what HE can do. Not what a few other QBs, who aren't as talented, did in the past.

This is an upgrade of Schotty...thats 100% agreeable by most. And Eason was coming to join that shite show..so...I feel confident Eason sticks

To me it looks like Smart had no fukkin idea he was gonna be offered a head corching job anytime soon especially at UGA until it actually happened. I still think its a pretty lack luster hire at OC but who you gonna believe..the talking heads in the media or the fans of the teams from which he has been relieved of duty for not putting up points when he needed to.But it was time for a change

Despite how we want to spin it, this is an awful hire with the only silver lining being that we should presumably upgrade the OL big time (in addition to landing an excellent recruiter) with pittman. Chaney is garbage.

We all fell for it last year. Missouri (Rams) fans tried to warn us about schott but we refused to listen, myself included. 9 year NFL vet we said. Solid pro style scheme we said. We see how that worked. All you have to do is look at the universal, unanimous, 100% agreeance by arkansas fans saying how awful he is. He was run out of arkansas for sucking. One year later...literally the very next year, arkansas's offense improved by leaps and bounds with the exact same players.

It will take him actually proving on teh field this fall for me to come around, which I realize doesn't mean anything. The question I keep asking myself is could he really be worse than schott? I suppose their equals at worse so that's good I guess.

Well said. This hire has taken a lot of the wind out of my sails regarding the regime change. Just an abysmal move.

I guess we're attempting to just be so damn good everywhere on the field that a shite OC won't matter, and hopefully in 1 or 2 years we'll can him and get someone else.

Defense shoudl be stacked every year Kirby is here, no worries at all there. Pittman should upgrade our OL tremendously, and not take too long to do it. We've always been capable at TE and getting nauta would only improve that. Eason can/would probably make any OC look good. As long as we get some playmaking from WR our offense should do ok.

I just hope and have faith that Smart knows more about what he is looking for and Chaney than all of us combined.

WG I agree we keep trying to polish the turd that was given to us. Scotty now Chaney. Let's just hope that our recruiting at the OL and WR position will give him something to work with. We killed Arkansas in 2014 but Chaney was able to move the ball on us once they stopped turning it over. Also we got uber conservative in that game both offensively and defensively. In my gut I feel like this is an awful hire but Kirby had to gameplan against his O and he must have liked what he saw. My big question is how far down the list did he go to hire Chaney. Couldn't be his 2nd or 3rd candidate

Kirby has never called plays before so it doesn't surprise me he went after someone with a ton of play-calling experience in Cheney. I doubt Cheney was his first choice but it's not like the CFB OC market is saturated with experienced coordinators looking to work for a first year head coach.

All that being said, I think Cheney will under achieve relative to expectations and we'll hire an up and comer in 2 years. Kirby will have had the benefit of working alongside a guy who has been coaching offenses for 30+ years and will be a better coach for it.

This is the big problem you run in to when you're a school of the stature of UGA and find it necessary to hire a DC instead of an experienced HC.
