Been listening to some Alabama talk radio trying to get a feel for their perspective this week..

Obviously, Bama's last trip to Athens is brought up repeatedly, but what's interesting is the Bama perspective on the Black Out and how awesome and intimidating and hard core a lot of their fans still think the atmosphere was for that game.

Whoever the alabama radio show people are said they've been to Iron Bowls, Baton Rouge, etc on and on, but that Athens Georgia on that night was the single most intimidating atmosphere before a game that they've ever witnessed. One of them compared it to the '81 olympic hockey game between usa and russia with Dawgs being the evil Soviet Union and bama the americans....

Shouldn't that be what it's all about? Just seems kind of cowardly and stupid to me that we'd quit doing something so epic and awesome and fun.......all because some fans are scared and self-conscious about 1 loss 7 years ago.

That's an awesome picture. That was the first big game I ever went to in Athens.

A lot of the Bama posters on this site echo that sentiment. I'm down with another blackout if it gets the crowd into it like that.

I'm for it personally. It's fun...gets the fans, players, and media riled up. It's got to help recruiting, as I can't imagine what those high school recruits are thinking if they're in the stands for one of those games.

Any claims that it is a distraction and makes us lose the game are bogus. To decrease bulletin board material (which is the biggest risk imo), the announcement should be made Wednesday or Thursday before the game - not a week in advance or even before the season starts. While I realize the players won't be wearing black in the official "blackout" against UK this year, I think it's very ineffective to select the game before the season starts. Don't get me started on "redouts" either. Every game that's not a blackout should be a redout.

Anybody who blames the black jerseys for the team coming out flat is an idiot. There was barely a sample size big enough to determine at the time that CMR-coached teams were susceptible to not being ready for big games at least once a season.

I agree. I would prefer that it be done for a night game though.

No one seems to complain when we have a "red out". The black is cool. Many teams have alternate uniforms or jerseys that they break out from time to time. As long as we don't wear that garbage "Power Range" uniform again, I'd be fine with us doing that, too.

That game was kind of a perfect storm for us. We had a really really good football team with a ton of talent, but they weren't getting a lot of respect at the time despite beating top 10 Clemson like a drum. Georgia being ranked so high at the time and all the hype surrounding the game just gave our guys the extra edge they needed. The "us against the world" mentality can really galvanize a ball team.

Something that team had that I'm afraid this one doesn't, was quite a few hard asses that held their teammates accountable on every snap.

Oh and Julio Jones. That team had him too

They interviewed Barret Jones earlier, former Bama center that was a freshman at the time... He said when they came out on to the field it was the loudest boos he's ever heard anywhere in his entire football career. And that it was probably the craziest atmosphere he's ever been a part of.

I wouldn't describe our team that night as flat. Their energy was focused on the crowd and the magnitude of the blackout itself rather than on the task at hand . They were full of misplaced energy. They were fired up as hell but for the wrong reason. You could see it during warm ups. The team was bouncing around with energy and somewhat showboating to the fans.

Meanwhile, I stood at the hedges on the Bama end and you could tell their energy and focus was on beating our Dawgs. They looked pissed off during warm ups with that us against the world mindset. All week, they played the blackout theme to represent a funeral for our Dawgs.

That week was crazy. Somewhere early that week, our players focus and energy got channeled to the wrong side of the brain. When I think of "flat", I think of being non-emotional and unpassionate about the event. That wasn't the case that night.

Black the jerseys out for the KY game. We can work the good mojo back in slowly.

I can only imagine how crazy that atmosphere was back in '08. '15 USCe was fricking incredible to me.

I agree.

Saban of course has a lake house here in Ga.
Lil birdie told me that Mrs. Saban would only allow one piece of sports memorabilia in the home.

A picture of Sanford stadium blacked out with the score on it......hangs on the wall. Saban said that win helped turn that program around.

How about, after we curb stomp them, we send one of Dallas' plaques (blacked out of course) with the score on it to hang beside it?

Because of the Black Oout?

How were they able to keep their focus against Auburn and Hawaii while wearing black jerseys the year before then?

Seems too convenient to blame black out hype for Georgia getting their teeth kicked in by bama for two quarters.

Black jerseys weren't the difference. Getting their asses kicked on the line of scrimmage on every play in the first half was.

Exactly. The jerseys look great, the players clearly liked them and would most likely enjoy them now, and it got the fans on board with being loud as hell.

Additionally it's not like we are 0-12 in them. Three times they were worn, all against ranked teams. In those games we won two by blowout, and lost the third game to a team that went 12-0 in the regular season.

Supposed we wore them again against Alabama and lost. How embarrassed should we be? It's not like that loss would magically make us have a worse history than Alabama. They are the superior program historically by every metric. We should wear them again and not be afraid.

As for some of our other uniforms I'm fine with burning them. Not because of some bullshite bad voodoo they held, but simply because they looked like shite.

And here we are again. Full circle. A defeat this weekend marking the downward trend of the Saban dynasty.

Symmetry.
