I think it had to do with the shot he took from Chewy, he seemed to be bleeding pretty bad from it, which led to him losing a lot of strength and having to use some of his Force just to keep standing.

I think that's what the movie wants you to think. Throughout the film they portray Chewie's bowcaster as if it were almost a handheld cannon. Enemies get knocked flying from the impact, and Han even asks to try it out.

So yeah, I can see the argument that can be made that Kylo wasn't fighting at close to full strength. Still, it seems a bit much to think that, even injured, a powerful and almost fully trained force user wouldn't mop the floor with an ex-janitor who ran at the first battle he saw.

Finn could have received training in a saber-type combat. That one stormtrooper with the the electric staff looking thing is evidence of that.

Thats a good point, and Im good with him putting up a great fight against the other soldier, but I can't see him standing a chance against one of the most powerful people in the galaxy, who solely uses that weapon.

Also hadn't thought about him being significantly injured, so I can believe the last fight quite a bit more.

Been reading the Movie board a lot since Star Wars came out. Others have mentioned the books that came out that go into more detail about the characters and apparently Finn was top 1% of his class in all categories and being a janitor was just his first job starting at the bottom of the totem poll.

Finally saw this a couple of days ago. As someone who wasn't alive during the original trilogy, and who thinks the second trilogy is fine (not excellent movies, but also not total garbage) I thought the movie was very good. Action scenes, special effects, etc all very well done. Really like the new characters as well.

I didn't like Fishers acting and that the plot was basically the same as ep 4. Other than that not a lot to find fault with.

Well, that might make the situation more defensible, but only a small fraction of the Star Wars audience would have read those books before watching the film. For the vast majority of movie-goers, Finn is only what he's revealed to be in the movie: an ex-janitor who runs at his first battle. If a film has to rely that heavily on "canon" that only appears in book form, then that's a weakness in the film.

And this isn't the first time the Star Wars franchise has farmed out story elements to a source outside the films. They did it with the Clone Wars animated series, too. I have to say I'm not really a fan of this tactic.

We shouldn't have comic or book spoilers in this thread

Sarcasm?

The thread title is Star Wars discussion, not Star Wars movie discussion. I didnt ruin any future plots and only shed light on a character already shown.

They should maybe come up with a better way to explain things, but I love when they add more story. Clone Wars was great, because it was just more star wars. I for one am glad we got to see more of what happened between the 2nd and 3rd movies. Probably the most interesting time in the actual galaxy where star wars takes place. The fall of the republic is framed in that show.

My favorite part about the clone wars show is they revisit planets (like Geonosis) or they go to others we haven't seen in the movies but we know about (like Mandalore). You get a bigger feel for the galaxy that you've only seen a little piece of so far.

I thought it was much more serious in tone and, unlike A New Hope, the Resistance still did not look like they had much of a chance to win at the end of the film.

They blew up Coruscant!!!

I simply thought he said he was a janitor b/c he was trying to downplay his relationship w/the First Order.

I doubt it will even be mentioned in the future films. It is information already available so no reason to put it into the movies.

Wasnt Coruscant. Was Hosnian Prime. Poe says this when he says the attack was on the Hosnian System.

Yeah the new republic senate was rebuilt, but not on Coruscant. They blew up the system they had moved the government to.

Your example is pointless since they told the story backwards. This is a backstory on a character. Something that isnt included in the films. Its readily available information. People had questions on already available information. I answered. Like I said, it doesnt ruin any future plot lines. It would be different if I came out and said Rey was Luke's daughter (dont actually know this) and ruined any potential plot twists for future movies.

Finn tells Solo and Chewie that he was in sanitation after they had already crash landed on the Starkiller base planet, with the purpose of disabling the shield generator and saving Rey. At that point I don't think Finn's loyalties were doubted by the others. I suspect the whole janitor angle was for comedic effect.
