There's a difference between being buddy-buddy with reporters and outright lying to them and to the fanbase through them. Which Sumlin did when he was asked about Kyler being absent from practice amid (accurate) rumors that he was tranferring, to which he responded "he's at home sick".
I mean, c'mon.
That's the moment he lost me. I had been an ardent Sumlin supporter up until that point. But that bald-faced lie was just a bridge too far for me to go with him. It felt like a slap in the face.

Sharp is becoming Perry

Yeah that didn't set right with me, either, and I said as much on here. No excuse for that garbage.
Was more talking about folks having a problem with him being aloof in general.
That said, all the goodwill he'd built up since he's been here (in my eyes) was erased in one nightmarish season. And he has one chance to fix it. Starting with the Music City Bowl, continuing with installing a new OC, and finishing with what had better be a turnaround season next fall.

Leadership is turning our university into a degree mill. That's an undisputed fact that anyone in the academia side will acknowledge.
I've worked in the education sector and I can tell you that some of the kids who have been admitted into A&M in the past few years are highly questionable, if not borderline Tech stupid. I know for a fact that these kids would not be admitted into A&M if they would have applied in the mid 2000's with the same qualifications. Sharp has not been shy when talking publicly about how he wants to grow Texas A&M's enrollment numbers for sheer profit. Its the only reason A&M has grown drastically in the past 5 years and has surpassed Texas in size.
Kids who should have ended up at Tech are now bleeding through to Texas A&M......let that sink in. Tech Tards who were once destined to that isolate West Texas dump are now becoming Aggies!
In about 10 years, you will start seeing our workforce reputation deteriorate. The reputation that took so long to build by Former Students from the 80s and 90s is now being destroyed by Sharp.

We've come a long way in the wrong direction since 1997, when we were #44 in the U.S. News and World Report best colleges rating and Texas Monthly completely shite themselves over it (the sips were in the 50's)

Secrecy doesn't bother me at all; we'll find out one way or another. He should probably be less of a prick about it though.
Also, A&M becoming a degree mill is fricking disgusting. Perry getting his cronies into UT and A&M is going to be disastrous for our work force in the future.

Ehh, now that I look back on it, saying Kyler was "home sick" is actually kind of a funny way to describe the situation. Technically speaking, Sumlin never actually said the sickness Kyler was dealing with was health related or due to nausea.
Other definitions of sick include
deeply affected with some unpleasant feeling, as of sorrow, disgust, or boredom: sick at heart; to be sick of parties
"He's at home sick. He is sick of having to earn QB1 in practice. He is disgusted that we won't promise him QB1 going into next year if he plays baseball. He is filled with sorrow for not signing somewhere else. Learning a playbook bores him. He is dejected that we won't do what his dad tells us. He hates being on the field with the offense."
or
characteristic of a sick mind: sick fancies
"He's at home sick. He is busy being delusional about how much control he has. He thinks that we work for him and is mad he wasn't QB1 the moment he stepped on campus."
or
mentally, morally, or emotionally deranged, corrupt, or unsound: a sick mind; wild statements that made him seem sick.
"He's at home sick. The kid is being a drama queen. His dad has him believing he is the best QB in the SEC. He thinks by throwing a tantrum we will kiss his arse even more than we already have. He talks like we would score 50+ a game if he was starter and his dad was calling plays."
or
disgusted; chagrined
"He's at home sick with an acute case of butthurt."
Besides, by simply saying Kyler was sick and not considering a transfer, Sumlin was able put everything Kyler's lap. He would return to practice as the unopposed starter or not. The choice was his.
One could argue that was actually a quite brilliant maneuver that has allowed Sumlin to somewhat galvanize the team around the idea of playing for each other b/c those remaining are the ones who are willing to work for their position instead of being handed it on a silver platter and not peacing out the moment things didn't go their way.

This has been going on since before Perry. Ray Bowen's "Vision 2020" was an absolute disaster even before Perry became Lieutenant Governor in 1998.

Some interesting comments about A&M becoming a degree mill. As some of you know we have a couple of companies in the oilfield. Quite a few Ags in the oilfield and I see a lot of Aggie rings.
Through sheer chance I recently found out that 2 of the most outspoken Aggies at FMC here in Houston got their degrees online through the University of Phoenix. They got their masters through the Mays business school in Houston.. and yes... quickly purchased Aggie rings. Spoken to these people about A&M, football, etc... many times but never knew they had only been to CS for a few football games and had never actually been to a class on campus. Was talking to an HR person at BP and this seems pretty common nowadays.
Degree mills get attention from time to time but getting your masters at an A&M branch in Houston so you can wear an Aggie ring seems much more insidious to me. People walk around with their rings on, they don't carry their diploma.
My opinion anyway.

So, bottom line is that we know nothing about Speedy's status?

and it looks like we never did. Gabe confirmed in a TA thread that nobody on the A&M staff had ever mentioned Speedy being suspended.

I don't follow any other teams anywhere near as closely as I follow the Ags. But everything seems top secret with the program. It's like trying to figure out what's going on inside the Kremlin. Do other teams also operate this way, and I just haven't noticed?
I get not discussing injuries, if for no other reason than individual medical privacy.
This Top Secret attitude seems to result more in creating rumors to fill the vacuum than deprive opposing teams of useful information. This tactic may work for Bill Belichick, but I'm not seeing it working well for us.

Yes...
It seems to be happening more and more but going largely unnoticed. You would have a hard time convincing anyone that went to A&M and earned a degree that this is a positive development. I was genuinely surprised.
Insidious - "proceeding in a gradual, subtle way, but with harmful effects"
Having a degree mill or ring discussion in a football thread is not insidious at all.
Got the Ags winning 27-23 by the way.

Yep. Wasn't there even an article on secrant.com about the suspension? If it's not true, how can the head coach not address it, for the sake of his own player? But given Speedy's track record, it would seem more likely than not that something is going on. I give up.

Eh... hard for me to fault Sumlin on this one. Gigem247 first reported the suspension, quoting... nobody. Nobody on A&M's staff has ever said Speedy was suspended.
Maybe he actually was kinda sorta provisionally suspended but not for weed. It might have been something academics-related that was fixable and was none of our damn business. I've no idea, but I don't think any of us are owed an explanation.

Agreed that Sumlin doesn't owe me, or us, anything. But if you've got a player widely rumored to be suspended, and that's not true, don't you "owe" it to the player to protect him from false accusations? A simple "There's nothing to it," or "That's false", takes care of it.
Posted on 12/28/15 at 9:24 pm to SafetySam
I'd agree 100% if there really was nothing to it. But maybe there was and talking about specifics would only embarrass the player. I have no idea, of course.
