It actually would have been with UH, not tu. LSU was ready to sponsor us. tu still had their high and mighty attitude about the SEC.

You are 100% right Tech and BAYLOR fricked us.

According to what I read, when the SEC considered expansion, there were six teams in the running: Arkansas, A&M, t.u., Miami, Florida State, and SC. Houston was NOT being considered.

Arkansas couldn't sign the paperwork fast enough. t.u. and A&M couldn't leave due to Tech and Baylor. Bowden was afraid Florida State couldn't keep winning. Miami was trying to turn the Big East into a football conference. SC was literally the last option and were completely thrilled when the invite came.

We need to spam the rant with "take it to xxx board" on all threads that address one team or player/coach from one team. That's gotta be 90% of the topics.

Farmer: you are half right. Had we left when the SWC imploded in '95 it would have been with Cougar High.

Had we left with Arkansas in '91 we would have been a package deal with tu.

It took us twenty years, but it worked out the way it was supposed to in the end - A&M in the SEC as the lone Texas school.

Gotcha. I didn't think there was any plan on leaving when Ark did. I thought it was a shock to everyone. It was before my time.

You know, I haven't seen much of Texas outside of BCS, so I'm still unfamiliar with the 'Horn leviathan that roams the rest of the state, but I feel like I came to A&M right at their upswing.

I can't remember when Arkansas announced but the conference moves weren't as publicized and scrutinized as now. There wasn't a website to discuss and newspapers didn't dig deep into it all that I remember. It just sort of was.

Kind of like when the Big 12 happened, to me, it was totally out of the blue. We'd (and I say that to mean students) heard rumors about things but no one really knew anything and suddenly it was just announced.

There were rumors but that's it, there was nowhere near the amount of info like we have today.

Well... 10-1 from '84 through '94. And yes, the date range is arbitrary and purposeful. But you won't find another stretch like that in the previous 100+ years.

But I think you're correct. Even in the 80's it felt like it was only a matter of time before it swung back. Now, I'm not so sure. It feels like t.u. really, really screwed up driving A&M off and has compounded the error since then. The "We're Texas" schtick is plum worn out.

Texas never had any intention of joining the SEC and Houston was talking w/the SEC in the mid to late 80s. I don't think Texas was ever really in play.

I'm too lazy to look it up but I absolutely remember reading articles from back then posted on message boards talking about it.

Well I don't even mean the head to head record in football necessarily. (Although I got here right in time for stadium expansion) I'm talking more of a rise in the athletic department as a whole, its exposure, the money its bringing in, and its popularity.

And the institutions as a whole of course.

Some track and baseball success before the SEC move... obviously theGarnetWay's enrollment has nudged A&M forward in football. I salute you, sir.

SafetySam, myself, and a collection of other old curmudgeons will be at the USC game. I'll hit you up on tailgate location before then, but be warned: most of us have children older than you.

I think the biggest thing the SEC move has done is obviously national exposure.

A&M was a top 10 enrollment, top 10 grant funded, and tier 1 academic university that no one outside of Texas had ever heard of.

Apparently at the expense of Carolina's football and baseball programs.

Which one? The Bush students are finishing up finals and papers this weekend so I think a small group of us will be able to make it to the Saturday game.

I'm sure both of us would love to attend a baseball game. But I'm in Mississippi. SafetySam is in Pennsylvania. We'll be there for Halloween and hopefully cokebottleag's dad won't dress up as a cold-cut sandwich again. Inside story, but it scarred us for life. What was seen cannot be unseen.

The 'sips have an advantage of much greater enrollment for the past 30 years. Well... much longer than that, of course, but that's how long they've been a behemoth. That's a lot of inertia to overcome. A&M will, I think, but there's no way to realistically expect it to happen overnight.

I agree that tu never had any intention of joining the SEC. They always looked down their snotty noses at the SEC. And we seemed to be more tied to tu in the 80s and early 90s than we were later on.

I remember being a senior in '95 when the XII was announced. My friends and I all felt let down because we thought we were going to the SEC then. Little did we know how close we were later when the stories all came out. Would it have turned out different if we had the information and and ability to organize back then that we had three years ago?
