Why are we trying to give recruits gigantic paperweights?

Give em a check, a night with AggieHank's wife, and a Chevy.

I realize this is starting to derail from its intended purpose of laughing at Baylor and now we are talking recruiting but I did want to comment what I heard the other day.

Guy I was talking to who knows two high school coaches in the state (I'll even tell you one of them is the former Navasota high coach) told me the both said strong is starting to win over a lot of the high school coaches in the state. Strong comes to the school, will give them his personal cell number, says to call him anytime if they want to come observe a practice, talk about players etc. they then said Sumlin will walk right past them, kinda nod his head as he goes by and that's it, will try to go talk to a player real quick and that's it. You want to talk to Sumlin? Gotta call the football offices and get through 3 secretaries if it happens at all.

Sure Sumlin isn't recruiting high school coaches, but he's not doing himself any favors to make it easier to convince kids by being an arrogant a-hole to their coaches.

Strong will also sleep with their wives saving them the hassle. Get them some F350s for the players and fix ACT scores; then fire the offending assistant coach. Players will also have plenty of time to spend with family over the holidays because they won't be going to a bowl game.

Oh I don't doubt he's cheating to some degree. He brought that assistant on that's been known for cheating and then let him go to save face.

But perception and appearance matter. These weren't two coaches with an axe to grind against Sumlin just because he didn't answer a phone call or two of theirs, was just legitimate points they expressed. I want Sumlin to do a good job of recruiting, just doesn't seem like he's helping himself sometimes....

man, I just heard the Ken Starr interview.

Holy frick how the hell is he considered an "accomplished lawyer" when he can't answer a simple question like "Did you see the e-mail titled I was raped at Baylor" w/o his PR flack stopping the interview due to his pathetic response?

saw a story pop up on Texas Monthly

looks like this kind of behavior from Baylor has been seen before.

quote:

Baylor and the Brazilian Girl

The same year that Brann settled in the town, a missionary named Zachariah Taylor brought an eleven-year-old girl named Antonia Teixeira to Waco from her native Brazil. Ostensibly, the plan was to foster Teixeira in the Baptist faith then return her at sixteen years old to her homeland, where she could share her beliefs with the Papists. Teixeira was given room and board at the home of Baylor president Dr. Rufus Burleson and his wife, Georgia, in return for domestic service.

When Teixeira was thirteen or fourteen, it became apparent that she was pregnant. Her condition was concealed from the public for several months, but on June 16, 1895, the Waco Morning News dropped a bombshell story. Teixeira claimed that she had been drugged and raped on multiple occasions by H. Steen Morris, brother of Burleson’s son-in-law who took his meals with the Burlesons.

The girl claimed that she had told Georgia Burleson about the attacks, but that “nothing was done about it,” and so they continued. At some point, the pregnant Teixeira was handed over to a Catholic woman. The Burleson-Morris clan had hoped that the girl would deliver her baby under her roof and return with it to Brazil, and the whole thing would blow over.

Meanwhile, Morris’s friends floated the story that she had taken a black lover, but that tale came to naught when Teixeira gave birth to a white baby, prematurely, two days after the Morning News story broke. In Brann’s words, the sickly child lived “just long enough to develop a striking resemblance to H. Steen Morris.”

In an attempt to quell the swelling controversy, Burleson dashed off a four-page pamphlet entitled “Baylor and the Brazilian Girl.” The girl had never said anything to Georgia about Morris, he claimed. The accusations were “black and damnable lies” concocted by a troubled young girl.

“With exceeding great reluctance,” Burleson claimed that the girl was “utterly untrustworthy,” and “in addition to her other faults, crazy about the boys.” All of this in spite of the fact that he had treated her just like his granddaughter, Burleson wrote.

Furthermore, Burleson went on to reassure readers that Baylor was a perfectly safe place for young women to receive their Christian educations, before reminding the good people of Waco all that Baylor had done for their city. “Rise up and vindicate Baylor University,” Burleson urged. As for Brann and his lot, they needed to “repent and confess openly their sins and receive forgiveness, before they are everlastingly lost.”

reading the rest of the article makes me think that story about some pissed off Aggies trying to go blow up Waco with a cannon might actually be true.

This is true and has been for years. Sumlin is a CEO coach, Saban eats and breathes it. You can see the difference in results. This is also is why Sumlin closes so badly and our recruiting is trending down the last few years without JFF buzz. Sumlin will be fired in December if we don't win at least 9 so who gives a frick.

You guys are full of it. Saban has the "largest support" staff in the league for a reason. He goes out and hires influential high school and college coaches that can get him the recruits he wants. Other high school coaches gladly line-up hoping for a future "handout" job on the staff. Saban spent almost $3M in non-coaching football support staff this past year.

Tosh Lupoi was one of those support staff until this year (now he is a position coach). He was an "ace recruiter" at Washington until he was investigated for NCAA recruiting violations.

LINK /

The NCAA looked into limiting the amount of support staff but decided that it wasn't a battle it wanted to face at this time.

The Sips immediately started expanding their support staff in 2013. This included a new director for recruiting. The biggest uptick in Sip recruiting happened when they hired Jeff Traylor, former Gilmer HS coach, as a TE coach. In addition to Traylor being a connected TX coach they brought in former A&M QB, Jordan Traylor as a GA. Many point to this being the start of the negative recruiting against A&M, because he had contact with most of the A&M current commits and future recruits.

Another aspect that posters continue to forget about is the Texas runs the UIL. They have always had tremendous exposure to coaches because of the fact that they run all of the Texas HS athletics and extracurricular academic activities for the state. Many athletes are exposed to Austin via various state championships and other tournaments.

Finally, look at A&M's offers. More and more are going to out of state (OOS) prospects. TX has plenty of elite talent, but our staff is trying to get the best players to win in the SEC conference and not the Big 12. A&M is offering a ridiculous amount of Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and California talent. More than half of A&M's projected starting line-up are from OOS and/or transfers or JUCO prospects. Even the Sips are recruiting heavily from Florida and Louisiana now.
