The misery index is right, we can still win 10 games:

LINK

At that point we will probably have a top 15 recruiting class again, with hopefully the OL and LB depth this current team desperately needs. Ever since JFF left we have circled 2016 as the year we would make noise. If we can take advantage of an easy schedule this year to get to double digit wins then the momentum can keep rolling.

Kyle was off and I think he was rattled and pressing for much of the game.

How did Kyle get a high rating out of HS? Does Arizona have some Ketchum wanna-be that if you provide enough greasy food, you get a high rating? He's been pulled from games THREE times this year due to poor performance for a QB who isn't ready. When you're pulled for an ineffective backup, what does that say about YOU?

I think the scheme to open the game was too optimistic about our ability to stop the run.

That was the stupidest thing I've seen. If you know the other team is going to run it on you, throw 8-in-the-box. Make them call your bluff.

We need more linebackers.

Chavis is both DC and LB coach. He needs to earn his pay and get some LB's in here.

Maybe we can swing a deal with t.u. Trade for Malik and offer 1) Kyle (who is still better than what they have), 2) 2x whatever amount they paid the bagman to give to Malik's momma, and 3) their next Bevo (we've given them the last two).

I mean, eventually Nick Saban and Les Miles will retire. Even if Sumlin can't outcoach them as long as we can pull a Georgia and do well enough to keep the roster stocked eventually Sumlin will outlast them. Then we can steal a division title or two in a "down" west division.

I think this about Saban pretty often. Miles? No. Miles is beatable. Saban is really not. It just isn't something any coach is going to be able to do while he's in his prime. Maybe he retires in 5 years, or at the least has the game pass him by.

Sumlin is going to do well with Chavis. I want the chief for 10 years, but I don't think he is still coaching after about 5 years here.

Run game

In 2012, we abused Bama with a play called Y-stick. It's a bit like a zone read but it's an option play keyed on the nickel lb. Bama plays a 4-2-5 vs us and one of the LBs covers the slot (Y-receiver). We run an inside zone play with the QB reading this LB. If he crashes in on it, the QB pulls it and guns it to the now uncovered Y. Swope had like 7 catches in the 1Q in 2012 on this play alone.

Since that year, Bama has done a better job defending this but their answer is just leaving 5 in the box and daring us to run. We ran this combo play 7 times I believe yesterday. The longest play was in the 4Q on the only time we threw it to Kirk. It was 7 yards I think.

The blocking on this is really at the 2 DTs. The center/guard combo the nose and once he is moved the center proceeds to the 2nd level to the MLB. Poor execution would be letting either of the DTs make the play. Average execution is containing the 2 DTs. Good is getting a chip on the MLB. Excellent is squaring up the MLB. On the 6 inside zone hand offs, we had average execution on all 6. This leaves the RB (Carson) vs the MLB (Raglund) for all the marbles. Unfortunately Raglund is a major league hitter and Carson is an 85 mph fastball. Raglund won 6 out of 6 and easily as I don't believe Carson gained more than 3 yards on any of them.

We also tried a few outside runs but Bama is simply too fast going east west for us to be effective. We don't have the athleticism along the line to get out and block like that and so I think all the runs were just for show. We have to make them think we'll do it or the pass rush and DBs can just sit fat and happy on the pass plays. But the run blocking wasn't awful. It just never got to the good level and with a MLB like Raglund, you can't expect Carson to be very effective without plus blocking.

Allen is not being pulled for being ineffective. Coaching staff game plans a few drives for Kyler each game. It's become clear that Sumlin promised Kyler he'd play in games whether a starter or not to keep him from looking around at the end of his recruitment.

Kyle is a good quarterback, he had one bad game. The recruiting services were not wrong on evaluating him.

WRs/QB

As I mentioned in another thread, Bama plays a hybrid nickel defense. We've been effective confusing the matchups with bunch sets and simply beating the corners in man. Our X receiver (either of them) got zero separation all game. I'm not even sure we threw to the X all game. I guess Speedy got one chance in the end zone. Reynolds was pretty well bottled up too.

This left us without a running game and without any deep threat forcing Allen to look over the middle constantly for Kirk and RSJ (who both had decent games). The way Bama aligns they pretty much take the screen game away so what we were left with is intermediate passes to the slots. That's pretty much it which puts an awful lot of pressure on the QB to be perfect. Every throw is over the LBs and under the safeties with a man trailing.

I thought Allen's first pass was nerves but upon watching again, he was trying to fit it into a tiny window (absolutely an NFL window) and threw about a foot too low. I really don't think it was that poor of a pass, just a really big ask of a QB on the first play of the game on a rollout. While I really liked the play design, I'd like to see us give him an easier throw to start.

Allen got absolutely hammered on the last play of the first drive. I think it unnerved him. The first play of the next drive (the very next play) we used Cheek to lead him out left and Cheek got manhandled. This was the first pick-6. Kyle didn't set his feet and stepped in the bucket and it sailed.

The 2nd pick 6 was likewise immediately after a play he got hammered on. He made a play, stepped into the pocket and delivered a strike for a 1st down. Then he followed that up by airmailing RSJ turning into a 93 yard return. It was a bad throw and his mechanics were okay on it. He just sailed it.

I'm not going to excuse the INTs. They were bad. But they weren't misreads of coverage or anything else mental. They were physical errors. When Kyle stepped into throws he made some really high end NFL ones. He threw a 15 yard out that Peyton Manning wishes he still had the arm to do. Allen's top end is enormous and it's pretty obvious.

He needs to mature mentally to be more consistent and eliminate his awful habit of throwing off his back foot. But as bad as the results of his game was, it actually wasn't as bad as it appeared. We put a lot on him and all the limited success we had was entirely Kyle Allen's doing as he was getting virtually no help.

What is the answer in the run department? My guess is it is getting the o-line to perform better and to have a back with higher top-end speed and elusiveness. Are these developments in the pipeline?

Watching the game on SECN now. Kyle taking that sack on 3rd down in the 3rd quarter was really bad. Needed to throw it away to give Bertolet at least a more manageable field goal attempt.

honestly it's not an easy fix. One thing that will help is not playing Bama. They have an elite front 7, particularly their DTs and MLB. That makes them very difficult to run against and it's not just us that has that problem.

Honestly, most of it probably can't be fixed over night and it's just continuing to plug away week after week and trying to scheme around the deficiencies. But I'm tired of watching guys after plays look like they are preparing for Sunday dinner.

Gone are the Joeckels, Harrisons, and Lewises. BJ recruited a bunch of nice guys with good length and quick feet. But not one of them has a future in prison or MMA. Was told the Anderson twins were the meanest SOBs in Texas and DC is salivating over them.

Exactly, he was obviously pulled for being ineffective in both asu and Bama. The only game he was pulled for Murray's specialty package was in the Arkansas game.

Nice analysis.

If we bounce back and beat Ole Miss, we won't lose another game this season.
