My expectations?

A&M will go 8-4, 9-4 after a meaningless bowl game. This will complete the 77th year of college football irrelevancy.

Along the way, there will be multiple moments of drama. Its impossible to predict the nature, but with Sumlin you know they are coming.

Finally, I truly expect the A&M faithful to look to 2017 as "the year" just like they do every year.

Eh, no one plugged into the program is going to think that. Next year is a rebuild guaranteed.

That is why this year is so important, it is our best shot for maybe three or four years.

I wouldn't define 2017 as a rebuilding year. A&M will likely return a large portion of the team. We lose a bunch of talent, but A&M is finally at the point where programs like Auburn are with reloading.

The main question would be at QB and it doesn't seem to be an issue yet (barring another bad offseason). Hubenak will be eligible and everybody is raving about Starkel. A&M could always push for Jarrett Stidham if they feel the need. There will probably be a bunch of other "free agents" too.

-------------------------further breakdown.

OL-3 starters based on current chart plus a bunch of depth.
RB- Likely everybody unless Keith Ford has a breakout year.
WR- Kirk, Ratley, and potentially Speedy are a great starter kit. Most believe RSJ is gone, but he still has a year of eligibility.

DT- Almost everybody
DE- Most teams would gladly take Johnson, Cunningham, Lockhart, Madabuike, and Durham
LB- Everybody but Washington and George return.
CBs- Everybody likely returns
S- Plenty of depth at that position, but it would benefit is Watts came back. This will be Sumlin's largest recruiting effort of the season.

ST- Everybody returns

By "a bunch of depth", I assume you mean "we return all but 2 offensive linemen".

and Walker of course

Not just Watts, Wilson too.

Can we all just hope and pray that Myles wants to graduate before moving on to Von Miller riches?

I hadn't seen Wilson on any draft board. It would probably benefit him to come back (along with Watts), among a crowded draft.

I think A&M 2017 is going to be interesting. You have 2 programs that A&M competes with who will have below avg. recruiting seasons at a minimum (BU & Ole Miss). The Sips are also struggling to manage their roster after taking in all of the BU players, so they will have a smaller class too. This is all without the potential of sanctions being levied on Ole Miss which would allow their players to transfer without penalty.

You better let that go. Best case is he gets drafted next year, as the alternative is he got hurt or had a bad season.

I mean, would you turn down top five draft pick money? He has already done a lot for us, more than most. We got a full rebuild next year anyway, let him make his hay while he can.

Our ceiling is probably 9-3 this year, but in reality it doesn't really matter. We won't win anything of substance (The West, SEC or be in the CFP) barring a miracle and next year is shaping up to be a 5-7 type of season. The attrition/recruiting decline seen in the 14/15/16 classes will catch up with us and we'll be starting Hubenak or a true/redshirt freshman. We will lose almost everything that could make this year's defense special and lack anything of note to replace them with.

It's a pretty depressing time because barring coaching acumen he has yet to come close to demonstrating, Sumlin's termination is inevitable and it probably won't occur until 2017 because this team is probably gonna go around 8-4. We'll give him another year to dig us deeper into a hole as we fight it out with Big XII teams for three stars.

It makes it hard to get excited because everyone with any objective sense knows it's coming but we can't do anything about it because of his contract. So we sit and wait for the bottom to fall out.

That was a real crappy class last year... None of those kids needed to play this year. That recruiting class was about building depth. You should watch the recruiting show from last year's signing day (LINK ). Btw...Stephen McGee actually said that Colton Prater was his favorite recruit in this class.

Inexplicably, several have shown up in the opening day depth chart. Prater, McCollum, Nick Starkel, Clifford Chattman, and Aaron Hansford have all been blowing people away at camp.

You also continue to forget that the Aggies added Keith Ford, Trevor Knight, Kalvin Cline, TD Moton, and Kirk Merritt as transfers already. Knight, Ford, and Cline are already in the 2 deep. Merritt is already blowing people away with his athleticism.

Kline is a nobody, Moton is out of shape and likely won't play much this year, Merritt can't play til next year, Knight has three years of discouraging game film and won't be here next season anyway and Ford has fumbling problems and wears down easily.

A&M is gonna lose Garrett, Hall, Watts, Evans, RSJ, Reynolds and maybe Wilson after this year. We will be starting Hubes, Starkel or a true freshman at QB. They can praise Starkel all they want, the fact is he was an "Oh shite, we gotta offer someone" signee. He has no business here based on HS film. If he pans out, it's complete luck rooted in a necessity recruitment.

The biggest issue is we have no pass rushers waiting in the wings. Johnson, Cunningham, etc. are below average edge rushers. We have nothing exciting to replace the losses at safety. Frankly, we'll lack legit NFL talent across the board next year apart from the WR, DT and corner positions.

Now, things change a bit if we go out and get Stidham.

I won't try to talk you off the ledge. Just hope you realize you are talking about 7 players out of 80 scholarship guys on this roster, of which 4 will still have eligibility left. If we get that many kids drafted, recruiting and/or A&M's attractiveness to transfers is going to likely take off.

Every single one of these guys has multiple All-American/4-5 star players waiting in the wings to step in and play.

Im talking about 7 of the 8 best players on our football team.

None of whom will be as good as those guys will be next year. Couple that with QB play possibly falling off a cliff, it's not optimistic looking.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I'm excited to have Starkel on our roster

Comments about Starkel at Elite 11

IIRC he was described as having DQ or dude quality. Intangibles like work ethic, leadership and coachability. DQs are thermostats, not thermometers. They dictate the temperature of whatever room they're in. I'm excited to have that kind of influence here.

I've talked to some of those guys from Elite 11. They were surprised by the 2 decommitments, but they are actually impressed with the direction the program is going. They thought the Mazzone hire was a real upgrade over the past predicament with the "caretaker" OCs.
