Well, if we lose any of our home games between now and January 6th, that will be the infamous "Billy Kennedy special"

Tonight's a tough game and kind of a no-win situation. KSU sucks so we shouldn't lose to them, but at the same time, they're a team with which we have history and they can play well when they get up for a game (see losing to Arizona by just a few). So we have to win this game and it will be embarrassing if we don't (from an NIT/NCAA resume standpoint, losing it will be a substantial blow, because KSU isn't going to do well in Big 12 play). However, it's going to be hard to win it with as bad as we suck on the road. Yea, it's not a true road game but close enough.

Updated. Anyone else want to question why I picked KSU as a loss?

Another embarrassing loss for Kennedy. KSU is a bottom 3-4 Big 12 team and is well below average overall. They lost to Long Beach State by 9. They lost to a very mediocre Pitt team by almost 30. Tennessee, which lost several of its S16 players and has a new coach, handled them easily (a burst of KSU 3 pointers in the final minute made the game look much closer than it was, but Tenn was up double digits almost all night). KSU struggled to beat Bradley and U of Missouri-Kansas City in Manhattan. Coming into tonight, KSU's only accomplishments were playing Arizona close and beating a pretty bad Purdue team by 9, and Purdue has since lost to Vanderbilt by 10 and Notre Dame by 30-something.

So tonight, in a game that we desperately needed to boost our chance at a post-season tournament for which we don't have to pay, we shite the bed. For the first half, we repeatedly gave KSU 1) great looks near the basket after their forwards executed fairly simple work in the post and 2) a truly embarrassing number of uncontested dunks/layups after rotation flubs. A quick note on that: KSU was shooting a face-melting 80% at halftime. On the surface, that sounds like a "well it's just one of those nights" scenario; sometimes the other team is just ON. But that wasn't the case with us. As somebody who watched the game, it wasn't even like KSU was redhot. We just gave them THAT many gimme baskets. Any offense would have shot 70+% on the looks we gave up tonight.

On offense, it was the same dogshit Kennedy rolled out the last 3 years, just with better athletes: lots of jumpers and not nearly enough attempt to get into the lane. Dumb passes into a very crowded lane creating stupid turnovers, which led to fastbreaks (we committed stupid fouls on several). Lots of pointless off-the-ball motion. Far too much iso work. Just the usual.

After falling behind by ~15 halfway through the 2nd half, we made a bit of a run near the end of the game, which made the final score look respectable (it helped that KSU choked and at one point when we were fouling, missed like 5 straight FTs). But make no mistake, they controlled us basically from the first whistle. They were better prepared and out-performed us on both ends of the court. And again, this is a team that was humiliated by Pitt and handled by Tenn.

Hit the best case scenario for nonconference. We'll see how conference play turns out.

Given what I saw today, I think the continued mediocrity is the best case scenario.

Same garbage, again.

Here's the schedule (with my predictions) if anybody wants to take a stab at guessing.

@Alabama: L
UK: L, and it'll probably be by 40.
Mississippi State: W
@LSU: L
Missouri: W
@Tennessee: L
@Auburn: W
Vanderbilt: W
@Ole Miss: toss up
@Missouri: W
Georgia: W
Florida: toss up (could move to the loss category if they get healthy and start playing well)
LSU: toss up
@South Carolina: L
@Arkansas: L
Auburn: W
@Florida: L
Alabama: L

Worst case: 7-11
Best case: 10-8
My guess: 8-10, miss the NIT, and pat calling for 3 more years.

It's not really a prediction if it's a sure thing.

Heh, just screwing around with you.

Sad thing is, you're right. He gets year 5 because of the recruiting class, and then he'll get year 6 because of the promising foundation he's put down, and then he'll get year 7 because in year 6 he'll take the best recruiting class in A&M history (as sophomores) to an 11 seed, which the AD will call progress.

He's basically here as long as he wants to be.

SEC play starts tonight at 8. Let's see what our rotation looks like for a game that really matters

The SEC is sitting at #5 as a conference in RPI but decimal points out of 3rd (it's really tight). Last year the top 5 RPI conferences all got 6 bids. And yet people are still acting like we're a 3-bid league. Chances are good we're looking at 5 or 6. And the Ags 52 RPI is currently good for 5th in the SEC.

In the mean time, Ole Miss is winning right now at Rupp (yeah, first half). That would be a huge win for the conference. A road win by Ole Miss against a team that will almost certainly end with the top spot in RPI would catapult Ole Miss up the rankings and make them a much better win.

I'm wondering what seems to have changed since Alabama. Since then they have improved considerably. Still, let's see how this plays out. Consistency has been sorely lacking under BK.

You said it yourself. Consistency. I think this team is a tournament team, but lack the consistency to prove that they are.
