Meanwhile, blueshirts represent the newest loophole for FBS programs to accumulate depth while not affecting their annual numbers. Like grayshirt recruits, blueshirts are counted toward the next season’s scholarship total.

There is one distinct difference, however. Unlike grayshirts, a blueshirt is able to enroll and participate in team events in the fall. This allows programs to get the best of both worlds: FBS schools can delay a scholarship for the following year, allowing them to over-sign beyond the 25-scholarship limit, and get the use of a prospect immediately rather than waiting until the following spring.

The use of a blueshirt was first popularized by New Mexico State, which would support its numbers by enrolling prospects right after the beginning of the fall semester and then place them on scholarship. Tennessee has also embraced the use of blueshirts under coach Butch Jones.

Not reading the link but with a "blueshirt" do you pay your own way the first year then you are on scholarship?

They are on scholly and can practice but they can't play. So it's similar to a redshirt but they don't count until next year number wise

ETA: they can play but they won't be on scholly.

According to ESPN, a blueshirt is like a preferred walk on. They can enroll in the fall and participate that year, and then are guaranteed a scholly the next year.

I would guess they would pay they own way the 1st year.

ESPN - Blueshirts

Tennessee has been bringing in a lot of blueshirts the last couple of years.

According to all the sites I've read, a blueshirt can play the first year.

There is one advantage of encouraging a kid to be a blueshirt as opposed to a grayshirt. Unlike grayshirts, who aren't allowed to practice or be around the program for the first semester out of high school, a blueshirt can practice and play immediately, as long as he pays his own way. The only catch is the prospect may not have been recruited, meaning he can't have taken a paid official visit to the school or signed any kind of financial-aid agreement.

So his options are go to state be the starter day 1 with a full ride guarantee scholly or go to Bama and pay oos tuition and hope Saban doesn't just say screw it and get a different kicker next class if he doesn't like the on field results?

While y'all argue, here is video of Bulovas barely missing 69 yarder in playoffs last year

Nope. Nice try though. Bet you wish your kickers could have made a few more this year though.

Brenton King just committed to GT to replace Bulovas and he is the number 1 kicker in GA. He visited UGA last weekend but UGA doesnt want a scholly kicker so you get Rico Rocket Boy Blankenship and his crazy family and he cant kick anything reliably outside 25 yards.

Play stupid games win stupid prizes.

Yes. One has a metro population of 235,000. The other is a town of 24,000.

Tuscaloosa is about 96K

Tuscaloosa County about 204K

Starkville is about 24K

Golden Triangle about 128K

So 204K and 128K is really telling isn't it?

Yes, Tech has a better academic and sports history than UGA.

I honestly think its hilarious that 1. People actually exist that think Starkville is desireable over Tuscaloosa much less Atlanta 2. Miss state is a better program than GT or Bama and 3....nevermind forget it.

Unintentional correlation. But pick one of GT or Bama > Miss State. But I agree GT is no Bama and it is not close.
