Putting in the effort.

Seriously. Harsin was the laziest, most arrogant prick when it came to recruiting. Tons of stories out there about not picking up kids and their family at the airport, not meeting HS coaches, standing up recruits at dinners...

He put in zero effort in recruiting.

ETA: Being able to throw some cash at kids and a $100MM facility just opening for this season don't hurt either.

While I don't doubt what you say above - clearly a bad hire - it's also fair to say he didn't have support of the boosters or fanbase - how much NIL was put out there for him versus Freeze? 20%?

Harsin’s greatest sin (among many) was actually believing he could out develop Kirby and Nick. Dude was an active HC and somehow believed all the message board nonsense about Kirby and Nick just out talenting people when they’ve both been developing players at a high clip for a while now.

Freeze for all his misgivings (of which there are also many) isn’t that stupid. He’s going to succeed in his first 3 years while the novelty and PT are in his favor, it’s years 4-6 that are going to be a mystery. But even if he flames out for whatever reason, Auburn will be in a better place than they have been with Harsin.

It was brand new so not much, but he wouldn't have known how to take advantage of it. Harsin also showed recruiting at a high level was not in his DNA.

The alignment of our program is the best I have seen since Dye. Freeze may be a lot of things to people, but he is a tireless recruiter and understands what it takes.

I'm just watching to see what that turns into long term.

Ok thanks.

Next question - hearing the Auburn cheerleaders are plotting to kill the Auburn football players - is this just the 2nd string or priority walk-ons as well?

It’s mainly in place for when a player does not meet the standards of their NIL contract.

Some coaches are just better than other coaches at connecting with kids. Then there is NIL, the chance at playing time early, and from everything I have heard, Auburn is a great place to attend college.

There are a lot of reasons kids might want to go to Auburn.

I don't know and I don't think Auburn really got the NIL collective together and on the same page until early in '22 maybe. But the stories are out there. The '22 or '23 clas in the state of AL was something that had never been seen before in the HS ranks. We got 1 of the top guys. There are 6A and 7A HS coaches in AL that had never met Harsin face to face and a couple that had never even talked to him.

The guy spurned an invite to Bo Jackson's charity golf tourney ffs. He spent his Friday nights going to watch his son ride the bench at Auburn High.

The lack of trying to build relationships with the in-state and GA high school coaches told me all I needed to know about the guy.

And this is just not true until everyone got a feel for what the guy was about. And he ain't about shite.

He's a blowhard narcissist of the highest order.

ETA: I really don't think some of you are grasping just how bad late Gus and Harsin were on the recruiting trail. Owen Pappoe was the last 5 star and he just graduated. Early Gus old get a 5 star or 2 and fill it out with more 4 stars than 3 stars. Then he neglected the OL for a while and it got away from him. A new coach, new facility (it really is very nice), and new rules means a new day for AU. And lemme tell yall, it's exciting. Thus year may be a wash, but I have a feeling that Auburn will be better than expected and really turn it on in the following years.

That's when everyone and their brother saw his true colors.

I was told emphatically that people in your Administration tried their damndest to press, urge and motivate him to get off his arse, get off campus, go out and let the "Auburn" brand be seen at those high schools. Some of which were less than a 100-mile radius from AU campus. And he outright refused!

The alpha male persona Harsin carried gave him an air he didn't really possess, and it turned out to be his ruination in SEC coaching.

I've heard the same thing from people I think would have an idea of some behind the scenes stuff and was floored when I heard it. I honestly wasnt sure whether to believe them or not. I tried to give the guy more than enough leeway to put his stamp on the program but it just continued to nosedive.

He may be the worst SEC football hire outside of Chad Morris just for his lack of effort on the recruiting trail. He thought he was above the fray because he was hot shite at Boise for a while and arrived with that arrogance to the south where that type of attitude just does not fly with people who matter.

There are stories of Bobo dragging him to meetings with high school coaches, or at least trying to get him to go.

The more stories that come out about the guy, the more they paint the picture of what an absolute disaster his 2 years were.

Needless to say, there is a lot more NIL money flowing in with Freeze than their was with Harsin.

Once the lockerroom becomes more talented overpaying the high school kids will prove more difficult.

I am not exactly sure Auburn is overpaying. It seems on par with some and less than others.

There was also some pretty concerning things said in some of the coach’s exit interviews (I know Mason was one of them, possibly Bobo and Nick Eason) that had some racial connotations to them. Then you had the mass exodus of players leaving the program. And of course you had him firing Corn Williams mid season because his daughter couldn’t keep her legs together….which continued to be a problem, its why he sent the younger daughter back to Eagle to live.

THAT is what started the investigation and Auburn was right to do so. The level of toxicity in the football offices during that time was at an all time high because of Harsin.

Clesi was told she needed to find another job, but when SDSU came to AU last year to play, she shacked up with the Harsins.
