naw, too early in the picking season. Gotta let 'em ripen on the vine right before the flip.

Shows how little everyone here knows about Arkansas sports history.

People still hate All-Pro NFL Keith Jackson for leaving the state and going to OU instead of Arkansas. He has been doing the radio waves for over a decade in the state and his son was a star at Arkansas yet the older generation still resents him for leaving.

We as a state are wired this way so this isn't a Coach B quote. You can come back to the state a hero and have a job lined up forever or not. Your choice.

That's the way the vast majority of our fan base believes so literally nothing to see here considering it's been going on for decades.

This is just dumb. I am an Alabama fan but when it comes to my business, I am going to hire the young man or woman who can make the firm money and help us grow. As long as they are competent, I couldn't care less whether the applicant went to Auburn or Alabama.

frick Keith Jackson and his drug dealing son using P.A.R.K. as a cover and distribution/recruitment hub.

All that guy ever says as a color commentator is "WOOOOOOOW!!"

Recruiting is the biggest necessity to winning in the SEC. Jones is doing it. Bielema?

That is the case most anywhere where college football is king. Fans probably have the same mindset as well. But what I'm getting at is the head coach, the window through which many see the University and state, is openly saying this. It is unusual.

Again, I don't think as fanbases go that any place, where football is very much a part of state pride, that fans easily deal with top prospect spurning the in-state school. You see it in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama as well. Not as much in a state like Georgia and Florida, where it is understood you can't "get them all". But you get the point.

You're clearly not a salesman.

And this has nothing to do with "hiring the right man for the job," if you're a good player for Arkansas you can pretty much get a job anywhere doing anything easy.

This is a basketball example but just look at Sidney Moncrief. Dude had never been a coach in his entire life, and he gets hired to coach a D-1 Sun Belt school at UALR. He would have never gotten that job if he didn't play for Arkansas.

So what is the consensus of the thread? Did we get it worked out that BB did good, or did he go to strong?

This exact thing happens all over the South. That's not the point of this thread. I was wondering why a coach would be so open about. Obviously there has been no backlash yet, but what does a kid do that's more open to leaving the state?

Even so, comments like the one BB made can backfire and drive recruits away.

I recall Eric Dickerson telling the story of the Texas recruiter who told him something very similar (something to the effect of ... if you don't come to Texas we'll see to it that you never work in this state again). That didn't work out for Texas. Dickerson said he hated Texas after that.

Well in defense of the Texas coach, Dickerson hasn't worked in Texas yet as far as I know. He lives in L.A. Did/does broadcasting in Cali and bases a mini jersey company there.

I think you missed the point. BB's comments are great from the perspective of reaching out and connecting with Arkansas fans. They are not great in terms of reaching out and connecting with players.

As the head coach, you have to balance those often competing pressures. BB seems to lack a certain ... subtlety.

No I fully understood the point. Dickerson was a bad example because he played in L.A., Indy, and Atlanta, made his home in L.A. and works in Cali.

The Texas assistant has technically been correct with his statement.
