Per Mirriam-Webster, an alumnus is someone who was once a student at a particular school, college, or university. In fact, most all sources I can find define alumnus or alumni this way. A graduate is not the same as an alumnus, necessarily.

Correct. Anyone that attends a school is an alumni. They did not have to actually graduate.
