Great season by two great teams. They finished the season 1-1 against each other & the cards fell in Alabama's favor

As I left the Oregon game in Cowboy Stadium I absolutely knew LSU was gonna have an amazing season.

Will there ever be another 6-6 game ever in the SEC?

You must not be able to stand a large number LSU fans (or any teams fans) as well then. All the 21-0 garbage was basically just a direct response to the all of the 9-6 garbage leading up to the game.

And, you must have a really short memory. Immediately following the game, hordes of LSU fans came on this board (myself included) giving tons of credit to Alabama for a well-played, hard fought game. I started a thread myself congratulating Alabama.

Do you know what Bama fans did?

They cried, griped, moaned, and said that they were the better team because they outgained LSU by 50 yards or something and that LSU didn't deserve to win. It was the biggest pile of sore losers I have ever seen. Tears flowed like rivers.

So, LSU fans, to combat the constant griping of Bama fans saying their team was really the better team, started just leaving 9-6 as a shorthand that meant, "Look at the score board." It was a direct response to the immaturity of the Alabama fanbase that found it impossible to credit an opponent with a hard fought victory over them.

So, we said 9-6.

Ever since, 21-0 has been the refrain.

But, it was Bama fans who started their junk first.

Oh, and in before 21-0 again.

I know this will depend on fan perspective but I think there's good reason to credit this version of history when Bama fans still talk about missed field goals and don't mention rushing yards or how long those field goals were. LSU got into the red zone more than Bama in the first game and that also goes unnoticed. And yes, that was on their field.

FWIW I do appreciate something of an olive branch from teh OP. As a LSU fan I do think the mulligan was unfair (when there was another deserving team to choose from other than Bama - they just lacked the name recognition) but the rules are simply different for teams that are favored by the human opinion pollsters. Complaining about that does no good and will hopefully become something of an anachronism if the playoff system goes to less subjective means of declaring a championship.

I fully believe both teams fielded their best team ever in the same year.

It sucked for 5 teams:

1. LSU- lost out on a national title and perfect season
2. Alabama- lost out on a conference title and perfect season
3. Arkansas- lost their only two games to the above two teams
4. Oklahoma State- missed out on a shot at a national title
5. Tennessee- somehow drew 1-3 out of the west and lost by a combined score of 124-20.

It will probably happen before a 3-2 game happens again.

Quite the contrast in games, though.

The reason I have no respect for the average Gump is because he doesn't RESPECT THE GAME. I applaud the OP for understanding the unique nature of what we witnessed that year, and having respect for BOTH teams.

LSU obviously had no chance in a rematch. The psychology of cfb ensures that when a game that close is decided, the winner can never get "up" enough for a rematch. The CFN perspective that it was a split series is the correct one, not the Phyllis-centric RMFTR douchery that Gumps have run with every day since. Karma is sitting back even as we speak, deciding how and when to even the Universe out. And when it happens (and it will happen) I expect LSU fans will work overtime pouring that salt in the wounds and the whole cycle will just continue on ad infinitum.

I was going to guess "no terror attack in the championship game" but I guess best defensive clash ever works too.

That's such a load of shite. It was the freakin' NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP! If you can't get "up" for that then GTFO. It's called coaching and preparation. Clearly, there was an advantage in Alabama's favor.

True. The use of the word "never" falsified his statement too. See the 1999, 2003, and 2010 SEC Championship games.

How did they know you were a Bama fan?

Also, the Piano Bar is a great place to hang out if you're a college football fan of any team. They'll happily play any fight song on the piano if they know it.

I remember getting a shocked look and a heart-felt thank you from an LSU fan when I told him I thought Bama and LSU were very even teams, (this was at the LSU coaching clinic at which Tony Dungy spoke). And that if Bama had won the first game that I fully believed LSU would have won the National Championship game.

And we all tend to label fan bases based on our interaction with the individuals that cause the most emotional response from us. There are definitely some idiot Bama fans...but most are common sense, law abiding, non-tree killing, decent folks...same with any fan base.

My theory on the perceived deterioration of the fan base since the 70s...the internet. No brainer. Discourse on any topic via message boards, social media, etc is much more hateful, etc.

Go back and read the threads from 11/5 through 1/9 (if they're even accessible).

LSU fans were absolutely insufferable...

Way to disregard all the shite Bama fans were doing just prior to 11/5. If you don't think the whole 9-6 thing wasn't a reaction to all the trash talking Bama fans were doing leading up to the game, you're not being honest with yourself. Apparently LSU didn't stand a chance in Tuscaloosa against the mighty undefeated Tide. bullshite. 9-6.

There's a reason 11/5 hurt so much, Alabama fans had convinced themselves that they were invincible.

Hey I respect the post by the OP a lot. I guess what makes me mad sometimes is that no one respects what LSU accomplished now, but hey like the late great Marquise Hill once said, "people are going to learn to respect LSU or we are going to hit em in the mouth", so maybe respect will come in time.

However, I give alot of props to Alabama as well as many other SEC teams when it comes to football; in reality, any team can win on any given day in this cannibal conference. It definitely does not mean that I like them, and I am sure that is the case on the other side about LSU. But as far as respect, I will always appreciate what the SEC has to offer, however will always love hating the opponents as far as the game is concerned.

Those were two ferocious defenses, and I hope there is another battle soon on the horizon, but it will be hard to replicate with that much pro talent on both sides.

I am glad the BCS system is done with because many teams have been hurt by it, but LSU also benefitted twice from it so all in all cannot really complain, it was just how the system operated. As for the truth, I think the best two teams played for it all in 2011 and LSU picked a real bad time for their worst performance- no excuses. (it happens to every sport team, and Alabama just came to play) I look forward to next year's playoff and really look forward to a six team playoff with the top two teams being rewarded with a bye if that ever happens.

I was wearing a white polo with a script "A" on the front. The encounter was pretty bizarre.

I agree. Those ladies are incredibly talented. Always a good time to be had there.

That's one of the most delusional posts I've read all day. Both teams were dishing it out prior to 11/5, which is one of the reasons why it made the game and atmosphere leading up to it so epic. LSU had already destroyed National Championship contender Oregon, and had toyed around with everyone else on the schedule. Bama had done the same to a certain extent, but without the big splash.

I've got no problem with anyone talking trash, or with the winning team rubbing it in a little bit. But don't dish it out when the shoe's on the right foot, and then start whining when it gets thrown back at you when the shoe flips to the left foot.

This garbage about Bama fans disrespecting the game and hurting feelings due to the way we rubbed it in is just silly. Both fan bases talked trash. Both fanbases have embarrassing, rude fans. And both teams were great.

One of the enduring scenes for me was when Les Miles was interviewed after the game in Tuscaloosa and he said "I would be HONORED to play that team again."

A man who can give that kind of respect in victory deserves immense respect in defeat.
