I'm sure it's easier for me to see it this way because the end result favored my team...but that 2011 LSU defense deserves better than mockery and constant talk of mulligans. When your team can't cross the 50 and you STILL haven't let the team in your end zone until the game was almost over, your defensive accomplishment is overshadowed. It shouldn't be. It was an honor to see defense played like that - so incredible that today the SEC is still known for our defense in a year that none of us could stop anyone.
I actually really appreciate this and thank you. That 2011 team was one of the best college football teams I have ever seen and any other year would have gone undefeated and won a national championship. What probably stings the most is the complete lack of respect shown it by Alabama fans as though the team sucked and was horrible or something.
Just one part of the reason why I can't stand such a large number of Alabama fans. Their team wins a game and they mock and deride the opposition as though they are horrible.
The truth is that there were two great teams that year and they went 1-1 against each other with Alabama getting the better of LSU in the last game. But, you are right. Bama could only manage 5 FGs until the end when the defense was completely worn out.
Bama was the better team that day, no doubt. But, it doesn't mean that LSU sucked that year, all of the 21-0 garbage notwithstanding.
Great post, CL.

Well, then the entire SEC had horrible offenses since LSU and Alabama shut everyone down that year and then fought to the death against each other in Tuscaloosa.
Oh, and that LSU team averaged around 38 ppg that season and Alabama averaged around 40 ppg.
Comments like your's are how I can tell when people don't know what they are talking about.

Your team JUST wasn't as good and got embarrassed 45-14 because the game lasts 60 minutes and not 30.
Get out of here with that "JUST" stuff, as if a 60 minute football game is a new invention or something.

Those ppg numbers are inflated due to field positioning and TO's for points your defenses caused. They both look like world beaters against slightly above average offenses. No team led by JJ should ever be considered to have an elite offense.

You must not be able to stand a large number LSU fans (or any teams fans) as well then. All the 21-0 garbage was basically just a direct response to the all of the 9-6 garbage leading up to the game.
Two great teams for sure though.

No one said they had an ELITE offense. Last time I checked, football also consisted of special teams and defense, two units that LSU excelled at that year. The offense was efficient for most of the season, as well.
At any rate, why should I expect a South Carolina fan to know anything about elite teams or championships or anything other than finishing second place? So, take your tears elsewhere. You are humiliating yourself.

This is a new phenomenon.
Back in the 70s and 80s, Alabama fans knew their place and acted like it. They knew that to degrade their competition actually degraded their own accomplishment. They knew that when fans of other conference schools talked about championships why they would bring up the literal elephant in the room - because they had twice as many championships as anyone else, and didn't have to point it out because everyone already knew. They didn't think other fans obsessed over Bama, they thought other fans admired and wanted to duplicate Bama's success.
But Nick Saban going to Bama kind of ruined that and here's why: Bandwagon fans. In the years just prior to Saban's arrival at Bama, the faint of heart had abandoned Alabama football. Then with the new found success the bandwagon, sidewalkin, t-shirt wearing fans showed up with very little knowledge of Bama's past, even less personal experience with it, and with a complete lack of sportsmanship.
In short, Alabama fans have now dropped down to everyone else's level and don't represent the class of the conference anymore.

Who is claiming it was?
The claim was that Both Bama and LSU had shitty O's..
Far from it.

And, you must have a really short memory. Immediately following the game, hordes of LSU fans came on this board (myself included) giving tons of credit to Alabama for a well-played, hard fought game. I started a thread myself congratulating Alabama.
Do you know what Bama fans did?
They cried, griped, moaned, and said that they were the better team because they outgained LSU by 50 yards or something and that LSU didn't deserve to win. It was the biggest pile of sore losers I have ever seen. Tears flowed like rivers.
So, LSU fans, to combat the constant griping of Bama fans saying their team was really the better team, started just leaving 9-6 as a shorthand that meant, "Look at the score board." It was a direct response to the immaturity of the Alabama fanbase that found it impossible to credit an opponent with a hard fought victory over them.
So, we said 9-6.
Ever since, 21-0 has been the refrain.
But, it was Bama fans who started their junk first.
Oh, and in before 21-0 again.

The 2 best teams in the BCS era. Unfortunate they fielded them the same season.

This is the Bama that I remember as a kid and, even though I an LSU fan, I pulled for Bama to represent the SEC. There was respect given and earned.
It is totally different today. Your second paragraph really nailed it as to why and I agree 100%.
Good post.
Bama used to represent class, in my opinion. Now, it represents the trashiest fanbase in all of sports - at least when it comes to they way that treat others.
Those 2011 games should ave engendered mutual respect. Instead, it was the opposite.

The truth of the matter was that the only team in America that could beat LSU that year was Alabama and the only team that could beat Alabama was LSU. I do not care who either team played or could have played, they were clearly the two best teams.

good thing the game is 2 halves instead of 1.
you can't claim we had a shitty offense then use pussy excuses like lack of defensive depth. makes you look like a bitch

That's a pure purple and gold glasses revisionist view of history, but who am I to convince you otherwise. It's all good.

I think it has actually, away from the internet at least. I disregard 90% of internet posts as most are said to get an intended response, trolling if you will. I'm sure there are some that are actually trashy IRL and aren't trolling, but I think most of it is just trolling.
The general attitude in Tuscaloosa this past year was a lot of mutual respect. I hardly saw any trash talking. It was a sharp contrast to the 2008 game when I was down there.

The problem with this is that you don't apply the same standard to your LSU friends.
Go back and read the threads from 11/5 through 1/9 (if they're even accessible).
LSU fans were absolutely insufferable... and then you guys want to cry about disrespecting a great team after you get blown out in the national championship game.
I took my wife to New Orleans at the end of November in 2011, and was borderline harassed by one of the staff members of Pat O'brien's. It was silly.
That's why I don't feel bad for talking trash to LSU fans about that game. They dished it out just as bad the first go-'round.
