I think you have #1 correct. John L was given a race car, which he immediately drove drunk into a brick wall. He was so wrong for that job, yet the flagship wanted to continue any semblance of Petrino, no matter the risk.

I don't understand his inclusion on the list at all. He wasn't a real hire. He was an interim hire. It's not apples-to-apples in the least. No one ever expected him to last more than the 8 months it would take to get through bowl season.

Sure - if you ignore all circumstances surrounding the program they inherit.

Weis and Callahan come to mind immediately. Dooley was the worst in the SEC.

I guess that even though Bert is an abortion of a hire, Arkansas isn't important enough to make the list?

There's a former Arkansas coach ON THE LIST. Fail.

He was a bad coach, but he did recruit well. Don't think he was the worst

He sucked, but I despise Bobby Williams way more. Holy shite, he was bad.

I read that as a Michigan State hire, not an Arkansas hire.

You need to consider what the the coach got when he got there and where he left the program.

Dooley got talent coming in and left them with nothing. Not a single o lineman in his final class. Awful.

Oregon was awful, but left nutt with talent thst he immediately drove to the basement

Chiz was awful but left talent there than won a sec ship

1. Nutt, ole miss
2. Dooley , ten
3. John l smith, ark
4. Robbie Caldwell, vandy
5. Joker Phillips, Kentucky

He actually did a pretty good job at Bama and I think he could have been successful. Not at all a bad hire, but the sanctions scared him off.

He coached the entire season. Arky wasnt forced to have John L as their corch. They couldve brought in someone else, or promoted another assistant or coordinator. Why does he not count?

Petrinos recruiting was bad enough.

To have the bridge between Petrino and bb be the disaster thst was john l smith, it added gallons of jet fuel to our dumpster fire

Not sure that coaching 1 year can qualify you for being a good or bad hire. Only time will tell.

I actually think Arkansas hiring Bielema away from Wisconsin was a great hire, but it will take 4 or 5 years to properly assess this, either way.

As a temporary hire. Are any other coaches being mentioned temp hires? Were any of them made aware of their impending doom BEFORE they were even HIRED?

It's not apples to apples.

Who could we have hired outside of the program? Phil Fulmer was the top available name in APRIL. It's just a terrible time to have to replace a coach.

You say we could have promoted someone else, but who?

Got to side with the Hogs on this one, John L. was a stop gap that was never going to coach more than one season. The person to blame for the abortion of a season is Petrino.

Garrick McGee wouldve been a better option than John L.

But my point is, why does he not count? Is it just to make that season forgettable?

I disagree on Ed Orgeron. He didn't get a fair shake. He never had a QB. He did make questionable decisions for playcalling but every coach does that, especially newbies. What he accomplished was to bring in a bunch of talent that Houston Nutt rode to a couple of good seasons. David Cutcliffe left the cupboard bare.

Tennessee with two of the top 5 and they were back to back! That is how you set a program back 10 years.

Glad we didn't make it three for three. It is going to be a slow rise but it is coming along slowly but surely!
