Why wasn't MSU or OM in play for Marcus Dupree?

Watching "The Best That Never Was." Dupree's final 3 was Texas, OU and Southern Miss. How was USM in play over MSU or OM?

Because we don't resort to cheating during recruiting.

OU had too much $. TNetwork hadn't been developed yet.

From USM though?

Bobby Collins had just left for SMU but SMU was already processing game checks before he got there.

$ from OU, and a glorified congregation pimp from USM

Easy answer: Because they sucked at football while OU under Switzer was equivalent to the Pete Carroll USC teams. OU was always among the top two or three teams in the country and was a perennial national championship contender led by a charismatic and very likeable coach. Why would any top recruit pick Ole Miss or Mississippi State over those guys?

Don't remember. Would refer you to this Willis Morris book:

On Finebaum the other day Marcus called in just to talk (and hawk his new book). He said he was being offered money by several schools...including 250k/year to attend one school. Claimed Bama didn't offer anything but Bear advised him not to attend if he was planning on being coached by him.

It was a pretty cool phone interview.

And I think he mentioned that the reason Southern was in consideration and us/OM was not was because Southern was winning and we weren't. Or something like that

We were 9-3 with a win over Alabama in 80 and 8-4 in 81??

I'm speaking specifically on the Mississippi schools. Of course the top teams in the country will be in play. But why USM over Ole Miss/Mississippi State. Seems both MSU and OM would be in bigger play than USM.

Bobby Collins was at USM. He continued the stuff Ron Meyer started at SMU resulting in the death penalty. USM had a pretty good qb by the name of Reggie Collier. I am sure he was talking to Marcus.

Because his pimp had a grudge against state and ole miss types. I also think he lived just outside of Hattiesburg and he was going to get his his no matter who came along or where he went. This is going off old timers speaking from years back. *Differ to Diamondawg on this one.

Even though OU was Big Eight, they might get as well have been a SWC school on the level of cheating.

Interesting. Makes since considering the "reverend" was trying to sucker him into USM after Dupree left OU.

Just hard for me to believe the 2 biggest state schools didn't have enough pull to overcome the preacher pimp

We weren't throwing money around. The ONLY reason USM was in play was because it was close to his home.

Steve Sloan at Ole Miss. Squeaky clean. Emory was at State. I don't think we had enough money to cheat. Bobby Collins (MSU graduate, by the way), dirty, dirty, dirty!
