This was less than 20 years after Kennedy sent the national guard to Ole Miss - Reverend Pimp was in his early adulthood when that was happening. And while the basketball team in '63 and the Holmes integration at MSU were good stories - the MSU types around Philadelphia weren't really fond of African Americans either.

And remember about this time two pretty good players had just came through Mississippi high schools and were guilted into going to in-state HBCUs - Walter Payton and Jerry Rice. Marcus wanted to be big time. His recruitment ended Jackson State's dominance of getting the best African American players in Mississippi.

IIRC, Jackson State has 3 or 4 NFL Hall of Famers, but none after the Dupree saga.

OU under Switzer was equivalent to the Pete Carroll USC teams. OU was always among the top two or three teams in the country and was a perennial national championship contender led by a charismatic and very likeable coach.

People today joke about the wishbone but if you've got a quarterback who's willing to play with abandon and sell the keeper every time, its devastating. Bone QBs take a beating though, I wouldn't my kid playing for a wishbone coach.

Payton was in the 70s. Not sure he was even highly recruited. JSU was probably it for him. Jerry Rice grew up 17 miles from Starkville, worked for his dad as a brick mason for a year before going to school and was in the same class as Marcus. He was not recruited by anyone that I am aware of. No way Marcus knew that he would hook up with Willie Totten at Valley and do crazy things under the "Gunslinger". Not sure what all the national guard stuff is about you mentioned.

We were 9-3 with a win over Alabama in 80 and 8-4 in 81??

USM won vs State both of those years and was in the middle of a 9 year victory run against the Dogs. They also had beaten the Rebs in 79 and 80.

The Longhorns got minor NCAA probation for giving Dupree a pair of Cowboy boots (or the money to buy them).

I think the reason USM was in play was because his agent/preacher thief that stole all his money lived in Hattiesburg and wanted Marcus in Hattiesburg.

That's right. State won in 75 and 76 on the field, but had to forfeit those two. USM then won 7 in a row on the field.

His recruitment was never about wins and losses though. $$$$$$$

I'm sure you're right, but Ole Miss was awful during that time period and the Eagles had the run going vs State, so that probably had something to do with him not even considering either.

We weren't throwing money around. The ONLY reason USM was in play was because it was close to his home.

Philly is a lot closer to Starkville than Hattiesburg. And that wouldn't have been the only reason even if it were true. Ole Miss was pretty awful in the late 70's and USM had a run going against State.

Marcus showed up on the USM campus riding in a new Maroon Oldsmobile Toronado during his disappearance. The day it was reported on the national news that he had enrolled at USM. I walked out of the registrars office and found myself in the background of a national news broadcast on the steps of the building. I was disappointed I didn't make an appearance in the 30 for 30 show.

Wide Receiver Louis Lipps was also at USM during that time. NFL Offensive Rookie of the year and a couple Pro Bowls as a Steeler.

Not related, but USM was the winningest football program in the state during the 80's. It was also the first or second largest school in Mississippi at the time.

Well Jerry Rice one of the best to ever play and he went to the WAC. Brett Favre went to USM etc etc. It happens and like Dan Mullen said "If you look around the state of Mississippi you can find jewels that get overlooked. We try to find those guys and evaluate. You look how many went on to play in the NFL and you realize how much hidden talent there is in this state."
