quote:No we wouldn't. There was no "SEC, SEC" back then. In fact, half the voters challenged the 2003 title for LSU, and the nation practically ignored 2004 Auburn's undefeated season. In 2006, the SEC was an afterthought; the entire media assumed #1 Ohio St vs #2 Michigan was the game to decide the title. Had it not been the final game of the season, we'd definitely have had the rematch we ended up getting with LSU-Bama in 2011.

Texas and USC were preseason 1 and 2. No one was going to be able to overcome that.
Ahh I see. I dont know, an undefeated LSU with Lord Saban and the Hurricane pity? I think we could have jumped one of them
And Florida wasn't in consideration as the opponent until USC lost. Even then, they were just considered a formality.
Florida in 2006 and LSU in 2007 is what gave the SEC the edge, and they've held it ever since.

Both are very similar in terms of facilities, fan bases, etc.
Then why does Bama beat L5U 67% of the time historically? All things being equal and such
LSU's facilities have improved. The gap that Alabama may have had has closed since the 1920s and 1970s when Bama was dominating the series. Lol. Since Bear Bryant the series is 19-14-1, I believe, with Bama winning the last 5...

Technically yes there was. I remember being in the Sugar Bowl in '01 and that was chanted in the 4th quarter. First time I had heard it and it was awesome.
I want to talk about Saban's teams in '01-'02.
In '01 we had 2 losses early to #7 Tennessee and #2 Florida. A few games later we drop a game to Ole Miss. Then something clicks. The team was on fire. We reel off 6 straight wins - 4 in a row vs top 25 teams, the last 2 wins being SECCG vs #2 Tennessee and Sugar Bowl vs #7 Illinois. The offense was prolific - Bama got a taste. I really think after that Ole Miss game, Saban's "process" or whatever you want to call it started to click. Many analysts said we were playing the best football out of anyone in the country. I'm biased, but I think in a playoff we win.
'02 we lose on the road to start the season at a top 10 VT. Then we pop off 6 wins in a row with Mauck as QB. Mauck gets hurt and we're stuck with Marcus Randall who was Jordan Jefferson before Jordan Jefferson. We go something like 2-4 down the stretch with 1 win being the blue grass miracle and the other being a 1 point win over Ole Miss. I really think if Mauck doesn't get hurt we're in the conversation for a title. Of course he's healthy in '03 and we win it all.

Also in that sugar bowl Saban grabbed the ref's mic and told our student section to stop throwing stuff on the field when we scored b/c we'd get penalized. Awesome.
One more thing I thought of: In either '01 or '02 Saban came out in the media slamming our facilities. Saying LSU needs to make an investment in them if we expect to win championships. Don't know how Alabama's were in 2007, but the facilities arms race should have been in full swing by then.

This thread kicks fricking arse, watching LSU fans making the exact same arguments they make fun of Aggies for.
Except I think they are serious.

I just think the guy is wrong. He had LSU setup to make a Bama type run and he bolted He won in 03 04 he leaves us but those 05 and 06 teams with Nick would have been deadly.
This and that LSU 2007 team doesn't lose 2 games under Saban. Saban had LSU stacked and loaded, no doubt.
Plus.........
Saban to Bama helped refuel LSU's program in 2007.
Just as Bama's 2009 title helped fuel 2010 Auburn.
Auburn's 2010 title refueled Bama in 2011/2012.
Hungry teams/programs eat!!!

LSU had been a garbage dump for a decade and he won 2 SEC titles and their first national championship in 50 years.
I'd call that pretty damn successful at LSU any way you cut it.
Trying to ask why he didn't do at LSU what he did at Bama is pretty ridiculous, what he's doing at Bama is unprecedented in college football history.

Exactly, nothing in their history says otherwise.

Long and short of it is Bama is willing to do more to get better players. Take it how you want.
