DiNardo. Shula. And don't kid yourself if not for the allure of the NFL he and LSU would have had continued success and more natty's. Truth is you and all your 'Bama fan brethren should thank their lucky stars.

You're right about the better support system.

But not from the REC.

LSU was a dumpster fire when he was hired on. It was a complete rebuild. He wasn't a proven coach yet so he was not getting GOAT recruit classes right off the bat.

LSU was not a dumpster fire talent wise when he was hired. Dinardo could recruit very well and started keeping players in state and Saban won his first SEC championship with those players.

To answer the OP i think he needed the years in the NFL to be humbled and he was able to take what he did right at LSU early while also recognizing some mistakes he might have made and changed those things to minimize the rebuilding process at Bama.

You do realize he left an insanely talented roster? He'd have won it all in 06 and 07

Many observers feel that if Mauck, Clayton and Marquise Hill had returned for an encore in '04 a second consecutive title was there for the taking. Considering they lost by a point on the road to undefeated AU and had one poor game on the road at UGA it does seem plausible. However, most great teams do lose key players early in this era so that's not an excuse. They still had a lot of talent and didn't get the job done. Saban had 3 bizarre losses in his five year career which really marred the perspective of some Tiger fans. The 2000 UAB fiasco('Bama fans think ULM) the ridiculous last minute loss to Ark in '02 which denied the Tigers the outright West crown and prevented a return to ATL and of course the Hail Mary loss in his final game against Iowa in the CAP1 bowl.
No knock on Les Miles because he did a great job dealing with the dual hurricanes of '05 but Nick may well have taken another title that year and certainly could have given UF a run in '06 when LSU looked like maybe the best team in the land during the Bowl season. Still, it must be stated that Les has maintained a better winning percentage against slightly stiffer competition than Nick did in BR.

I dont think he learned anything. He was primed and ready to go when he left LSU

03-Natty
04-9-3
he leaves
05- absolutely stacked team. went 11-2 with new head coach and Katrina and lost in sec title game
06-absolutely stacked team that went 11-2. some say one of the best teams talent wise in lsu history

It is safe to assume if Saban stays there is a damn good change we win 3/4 titles

I don't think Saban would have handle the Katrina thing as well as Miles did. Saban is a machine and demands structure and doesn't deviate from the process. Miles with all his faults somehow thrived under the chaotic situation that was the beginning of the'05 season. Had they had their normal bye week that year they could have won it all. That team was shot by the SEC championship game.

. Only thing that would have stopped that 05 team was Katrina.

LSU had a zero percent chance of winning a NC in 2005.

Yeh the no bye week killed us. I think Saban doesnt get enough credit for how much of an internal motivator he is. I think he could have had the team rally around the hurricane

Texas and USC were preseason 1 and 2. No one was going to be able to overcome that.

I don't see it. The media was hyping a Texas-USC NC the day after USC destroyed OU.

USC was not leaving the #1 spot unless they lost, so you would have to have a team jump an undefeated Texas team that (after beating #4 OSU in a close game) won their last 10 games by an average of 37 points. And they won their conference title game 70-3 (even if it WAS a pathetic Colorado team).

Saban also wasn't the hype train he is now. He got that by starting 12-0 in his second season at Bama, then going one step further in his third season.

He learned a lot from his failures in the NFL. I'm convinced that's what made him become so dominant. He's a much better coach for it.
