He was a proven name when he got to Alabama.

The recruits followed.

Pretty easy.

He hadn't won a national title when he got to LSU.

He was definitely a very good coach, and people knew that, but he didn't have the same pedigree at the college level when he started at LSU as he did when he started at Alabama

We are in any teir below Bama in the SEC. Bama sits alone.

I'll probably put Tennessee ahead of us because of history.

No one else.

Exactly, nothing in their history says otherwise.

Bama fans overvalue "history" like nobody's business. As if the ghosts of yore help programs into infinity a la Angels in the Outfield

Obviously history is great and helps you obtain and sustain more reality based, objectively measurable resources with which to continue to win. But it's not some finite thing that dictates who the best programs are forever and ever.

One more thing I thought of: In either '01 or '02 Saban came out in the media slamming our facilities. Saying LSU needs to make an investment in them if we expect to win championships. Don't know how Alabama's were in 2007, but the facilities arms race should have been in full swing by then.

Good answer......

Saban moved into a LSU house and neighborhood that had potential. Saban move into a Bama neighborhood where the house was almost perfect and move in ready! Bama's program being better historically when compared to LSU sure had Bama ready for what it takes to lure great recruits today. It takes having the goods to land recruits today and Saban & Staff were loaded when they arrived at Bama.

he relied on talent and defensive lines at LSU, at Bama he's tapped into the lesser known sister humping Juju that other programs can't hope to duplicate

He wasn't exactly the biggest name in coaching when he got to Alabama either.

A lot of Bama fans wanted us to hire Rich Rod instead of Saban at the

Yes, he was. Spurrier was a close second.

No, they didn't.

Maybe the question should be:
Why didn't LSU have more success with Saban?

I just think the guy is wrong. He had LSU setup to make a Bama type run and he bolted

I'll borrow a phrase from the Trojan war documentary when the guy was talking about UCLA and insert Alabama and LSU instead.

I don't hate LSU fans. I hate when LSU fans compare their program to BAMA's.

We are getting into a situation where a lot of the posters here frankly were too young to remember Sabans days at LSU. They stories get bigger of LSU with time.

Fact is there ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to support LSU being in the same stratosphere as Bama in football historically. Absolutely zero.
The only time Bama hasn't been a better program was when Bama was on probation that under the current NCAA brass, would have never been on probation because now they wouldn't have had the proof they seek today.

Saban didn't win as much at LSU is because LSU isn't Alabama. Not in football. Never have been at that level for any sustained period of time. If you don't believe it compare the history of the schools. Top 10 finishes, bowl games, All-Americans, national titles, SEC titles, whatever. Check it out and tell me they compare. To Auburn, yes LSU compares, not to Bama.
Saban won the 03 title but nobody in America really remembers that team. SC gets the pub from that era.

Saban WOULD NOT have won 4 titles in his fist 7 years at LSU. He wouldn't have won 4 in his first 10. I do not believe for a second he would have 4 if he were still there to this very day. He MIGHT have 2.

Maybe, but LSU has recruiting advantages Bama doesn't have being the only legitimate program in the state with the highest per capita amount of NFL players.

I don't think Saban really became Saban until he decided to recommit himself permanently to college football

That is why I think even if he remained at LSU his success would've been limited until deciding college is where he truly wanted to be

I'll give LSU credit every day of every year for being a better baseball school. Football no but baseball I bow to your greatness

With that I'll say this:
With the lotto schollie situation LSU should NEVER lose to 12 schollie Alabama. Bama shouldn't come within 10 runs of LSU in baseball at anyplace or anytime. To lose to a 12 schollie only team should be grounds for a coaches immediate termination.

Second-I had much rather be good in football than a sport where Stony Brook, Dallas Baptist and Pepperdine are amoung the elite teams.

2001 recruiting class was elite and the reason we won in 2003. 2002 class was terrible. 2003 class was best in the nation. 2004 class was top 2 in the nation. He left the team stacked. LSU then ran off two 11 win seasons and a 12 win natty. Saban could have at least done the same. His five years featured 3 elite classes. One that won him a national championship and two that he was just getting to develop. LSU would have won at least one with Saban as well from 2005-2007.
