re: Why Clemson's last two TD's should have been penalties

On the 1st TD, the WR at least faked like he was running a route. On the game winner, dude started crab blocking from the whistle. Pretty obvious imo.

Textbook definition of a penalty.
agree. The DB can "bump" a receiver within 5 yards of the LOS, he just can't tackle him.

When done right a pick play is nothing more than a defender running into an offensive player set up for a short hook. That is exactly what happened on Clemson's first "pick" touchdown. The tight end just picked the perfect spot to set roots.
The ND pick play you referenced ventured into shady/illegal territory because the "blocker" was still moving as the receiver broke away into his pattern.
On the second Clemson "pick" touchdown, it looked like the Alabama defender pulled the blocking receiver into the path of his teammate. Not sure that is exactly what went down, but that's what it looked like.

What play were you watching? Because that's basically the opposite of what happened on the final TD.

Not saying it is or isn't a penalty, but it's something that needs to be reviewed by the rules committee and defend what is or isn't a illegal pick going forward. Half the time its called half the time it isn't.
It was perfectly legal. Why is it every time things go against Bama your fanbase wants to change the rules?

For those complaining about the pick play watch this...
Bama pick play
And get back to me. Also watch a few big 12 games they run these pick plays all the time. Of course Big 12 officials aren't going to call it, they never have before.

Two things happened last night that normally does not happen...
Bama never gets called for holding when the game is still in doubt and the other teams gets called for anything when they are starting to take over to bail Bama out of trouble...
The opposite happened last night and you just watched as the players and coaches were frustrated by this...

The second one wasnt even in consideration. The db initiates contact at the line, and then pulls down the clemson player, and the two Bama players knock into each other.

The clemson plays were both legal

Perhaps a little hyperbole, but the outside receiver was not running a route, nor did he pretend to run a route.

Kinda hard to even pretend to run a route when a DB drags you down.

Alabama’s bid to win a second straight national championship fell short thanks to a combination of injuries, a lack of depth on its defensive line that finally came to a head and the struggles of a true freshman quarterback who seemed to run out of gas a bit down the season’s stretch. But the fact two of Clemson’s touchdowns came on illegal pick plays in the end zone didn’t help Alabama’s chances at all. Clemson scored identical touchdowns with future NFL star Mike Williams and likely future New England Patriots camp invitee Hunter Renfrow on the receiving end; both plays should have been flagged for offensive pass interference on the complementary receiver on that side of the field. So blatant was the second that the off-receiver didn’t even make an attempt to cover up his intentions, drive-blocking Marlon Humphrey into the end zone while redirecting safety Tony Brown away from Renfrow.

Saying pick confuses the issue, especially on the first one. People will say the back DB didn't get touched, but that doesn't matter. A rrceiver can't block down field before the pass is thrown, which is exactly what the TE did on that play, went straight at the DB and blocked him 4 yards before the ball was thrown. That's offensive PI regardless. Second one is more gray area. The wr is definitely blocking, but the DB also is engaging
