Don't know who's the worst coach in sec basketball history but for my Kentucky Wildcats it's Billy Gillispie.

Johnny Jones missed the NIT with a top 10 (in terms of talent) starting 5 in the country including national freshman of the year and unanimous All-American Ben Simmons. I believe 4/5 of the starting 5 made an NBA roster.
I hate this reminder. Simmons, Blakeney, Quarterman, Gray and Sampson all made NBA appearances at some point from that team. That doesnt include Craig Victor or Keith Hornsby who were really good college players too on that team.
It's ridiculous Johnny Jones went 19-14 with that team

It looked like we were a shoe in for the tournament sitting at 8-2 in the SEC, then he went 3-5 last 8 SEC games to finish 11-7 SEC and went 1-1 in SECT for us to not get an invite ultimately. He lost to Marquette, College of Charleston, NC State, Wake Forest and Houston OOC who all didnt make the NCAAT that season. Wake and NC State had losing records. College of Charleston finished 8-10 in the CAA and he lost by 12 to them

Rick Ray had back to back 0-for-February’s. Did not win a game in the month of February until Year 3. Had two consecutive seasons with losing streaks of 13+. I watched this man lose 72-31 AT HOME to a Vandy team that finished sub .500 overall.
Amazingly he only finished last in the SEC once, which says just so much about how bad SEC hoops was in the late 2000’s and early to mid 2010’s

First person I thought of….Lord, that was a brutal stretch for a life long MSU fan like myself.

Houston never went winless in the SEC.

My lifetime for LSU, I’d probably say Trent Johnson. Johnny Jones, a very close 2nd.

Darrin Horn might not be the worst X and O coach, might not be the worst recruiter, but he was such a sour fricking a-hole and clearly didn’t want to be here other than a paycheck. Kind of like mark kingston but at least Kingston has made the tourney. Needed a mention here at least.

...and the SEC never sent more than 4 teams to the NCAA tournament when Houston was head coach. The conference (top to bottom was worse). In 1994, he beat 1 team that finished the season above .500.

I don't know about SEC history, but for UGA I'd vote for Ron Jirsa.
Mainly because he took a foundation built by Tubby Smith that was pretty good and drove UGA back to .500.
Other UGA coaches have had worse records, but Jirsa was the only one that really had a good starting point and trashed it.

Hobbs seemed to be going downhill fast the last two seasons but did at least make it the 2nd round of the NCAA tourney a couple of times in his 5 years. Probably the worst at Alabama in very long time though.

That's right, we gave somebody who posted 5 straight losing records another year, which he used to go 0-16 with 2 lottery picks on the team.
This is a bit misleading. He went 14-14 that year, which was the first .500 or better season at A&M since 1994 and amazingly is the only A&M coach besides Shelby Metcalf to win in Austin in my lifetime.

Not really. Other than Pete Maravich, can you name a player on one of Press's teams?
I'll help you some: Ralph Jukkola, Apple Sanders, Fig Newton and Tommy Hess were pretty good ballers, but I don't think any of them played in the pros.

I always gave Jones the benefit of the doubt prior to that season, but he really stunk it up that year, given the immense talent of that team. Ben Simmons was really a disappointment, but maybe he doesn't deserve the anger fans vented toward him. The coach failed Ben, and failed that team. The team the following year was LSU's worst with lone exception of Press Maravich's first team.
