It's hard to be record setting terrible because right as you're hitting your stride you're normally fired. So to do something genuinely noteworthy you need a terrible coach at an apathetic school.

That perfect storm was Melvin Watkins at A&M in the late 90s and early 2000s. Conference records:
5-11
4-12
3-13
3-13
6-10
0-16
Total: 21-75, 21.9% winning percentage

That's right, we gave somebody who posted 5 straight losing records another year, which he used to go 0-16 with 2 lottery picks on the team.

Billy Gillespie tried to get one of our guys to try and block a free throw.

It was smart so his team could get the ball back. Tried to set up a foul call on the inbound play. Probably the 1 play that has confused me the most at the time and I remember it like yesterday.

As Bama is the 2nd winningest SEC school.. we haven't had any horrible coaches.. just some underperformers.. Hobbs and Grant could've been better. Gottfried is a program fixer not a sustainer. Avery could have done some good things but I don't think he particularly liked being here after a few years.
Newton, Wimp and Oats are legendary now Gottfried too.. he just fell off.

So is there a school willing to put Watkins and Barbie on the staff with Creen?

Could really rack up some losing streaks.

This. John Pelphrey has to be the Arkansas submission...at least in the modern era. Guy was utterly clueless, and lazy as shite on top of that. His Tennessee Tech run is continuing to prove how bad he is..

But why did he fall off? Didn't he actually have BAMA at #1 when Mo Williams was leading the pack, and then they just fell off the edge of the earth. ? They quit playing for him. He could recruit and he had the Xs and Os. It was the players who said no.

Not making the tourney with Anthony Edwards

To be fair, Anthony Edwards wasn't suited for the college game.
He was biding his time for the NBA.
Still, Crean was awful. We've had some bad ones.
Ron Jirsa also comes to mind. Despite that SEC tourney run, Dennis Felton was bad. John Guthrie was the coach my freshman year. Just terrible.

Statistically, Ray was better than both Bob Boyd and Paul Gregory. Bob was a great guy and good with the media, but we were bad. Paul Gregory was an excellent baseball coach, but he was no good at basketball.

Any other coaches on the list with a 22 loss season? Houston had two of them in 5 seasons at UT.

Did Houstonever go winless in the SEC?

Whoever Missouri’s Coach is this year has to high on the list for going winless in the SEC.

Tom Crean went 16-16 with Anthony Edwards.

And he kissed his teenage son on the lips.

IN PUBLIC.

I don't know but it seems players got tired of his style as well as he may have started partying a bt... he also had a hard time with the football school thing.. he never embraced football like he clearly should have.

Houston did not go winless in the SEC...but, the SEC (top to bottom) wasn't what one might call a Powerhouse of the Power Conferences. Here is how many teams the SEC sent to the NCAA Tournament in Houston's 5 seasons at UT...vs how many they have sent in Gates' 2 seasons at Missouri:

1994 - 4
1993 - 4
1992 - 4
1991 - 5
1990 - 3

2024 - 8
2023 - 8

Sure...in 1990 and 1991, there were only 10 SEC teams...but from 1992 on there were 12.

In 1994, Tennessee went 5 and 22...compared to Missouri's 8-24 this season.

Missouri's best wins this season were over:
19-15 Minnesota
22-11 Pitt

In 1994...Tennessee had 1 win over a team that was over .500...that was 14-13 (7-9) Ole Miss. Their other 4 wins were over:

5-22 Tennessee Martin
5-24 Mercer
11-17 Auburn
10-21 Tennessee Tech

So...the teams Tennessee had wins over were a combined 45-97 (.317).

This season's Missouri wins were over:
13-18 Arkansas Pine Bluff
17-16 SIU Edwardsville
19-15 Minnesota
14-18 South Carolina State
7-25 Loyola MD
22-11 Pitt
15-19 Wichita St.
9-23 Central Arkansas

These opponents had a combined record of: 116-145 (.444).

Joker Philips in football. Inherited a bowl team from Rich Brooks and in three seasons had us 2-10 and losing at home to Candy 40-0.
This a thread about worst coaches in sec basketball history but I do agree Joker Philips is one of the worst football coaches for Kentucky football history.
