When reviewing a lot of the responses to the "national ranking" post, it made me think of this topic. Basically, schools that exist in a state with a "University of State" program in state.

I'd probably put them in this order

(1) Florida State (49th Wins, 13th W%, 12th Bowl App, 3 National Titles)

(2) Auburn (13th Wins, 20th W%, 16th Bowl App, 2 National Titles)

(3) Texas A&M (16th Wins, 26th Win%, 19th Bowl App, 1 National Title)

(4) Georgia Tech (17th Wins, 31st W%, 13th Bowl App, 1 National Title)

(5) Clemson (20th Wins, 24th W%, 17th Bowl App, 1 National Title)

(6) Michigan State (26th Wins, 25th Win%, 39th Bowl App, 2 National Titles)

(7) Virginia Tech (15th Wins, 23rd Win%, 36th Bowl App, 0 National Titles)

Next group : Texas Tech, Arizona State, NC State, Mississippi State

Note : I didn't really include any of the California schools, as they Berkeley is technically the flagship but not in the same way as Alabama/Auburn, Michigan/Michigan State, South Carolina/Clemson, etc.

Penn State is Pennsylvania's flagship school. UPenn is private and a member of the Ivy League.

I knew Penn was private, I wasn't sure if Penn State was technically the flagship of the state.

Thanks for pointing that out.

As far as I know, Penn State and LSU are the only "________ State" schools that are the flagship universities of their respective states. You could make an argument for Ohio State, but only sports supports it. Ohio University was around nearly 70 years before OSU, and OSU, like most "_________ State" schools were Morill Act of 1862 schools.

Fun fact: Michigan State was the first land grant college, and it was done by state charter, not federal. They could not pass a national land grant college act until 1862, when the Confederate states were not in Congress. A little known senator from Vermont got the support to create most every "_______ State" school in the country.

A&M is a flagship university for the state.

A&M is also older than tu if that is your measure.

Miami should be considered,

11th all time in NFL draft picks
4th all-time in first round picks
15th in consensus All-Americans
18th in bowl appearances
8th in weeks spent as #1
2 Heisman winners
5 national titles

The biggest thing going against them is their all time wins (596 all time wins).

*edit- are you only wanting public universities?

A&M is absolutely not the flagship school in Texas. Common man. I like A&M. Probably my third favorite school in the SEC behind UGA and LSU but that is UTs honor.
