I'm not sure what we are supposed to expect out of Mullen.

Fact is he will never win any big games, but he will never lose many games he shouldn't.

But just because he is a decent coach, doesn't mean state fans should overlook the fact that he has gotten worse against decent competition rather than better.

7 games over .500 in the first four years isn't enough to be on the hot seat?

So you think coaching at Miss State is the same as coaching at Alabama? Just how fricking stupid are you?

Mullen would have an 8MM buyout after the 2013 season- his job is safer than Saban's right now

State's AD was quoted just this past Sunday:

Well, that is silly because he?s not on the hot seat,? Stricklin told ESPN.com Sunday night.
"Mullen isn?t even in a hot room"

All of those pieces of it are phenomenal,” Stricklin said. “Dan has the traits that all really good coaches have. He’s very bright, very smart and he’s very organized. That’s a pretty powerful combination.”

No one is overlooking this -- but you have to ask yourself "why did we get worse in these games?" Was those reasons addressed in the offseason? The reason we got worse is because the defense underperformed -- and we got rid of 2 position coaches on that side including the DC whose scheme was shite.

The new DC was a Broyles finalist as a DC the year before he came to MSU -- and by all accounts, his style is alot more Diaz than Wilson.

Surely no one truly believes that our talent level has dropped from the Croom years and Mullen's first 2 years here...

There were also offensive shortcomings that weren't addressed in personnel changes -- but have been addressed in who is actually doing the playcalling, and in the modification of our offense to fit our QB. Our single largest problem last year was that our receivers couldn't get separation. We've got several guys this year that can -- the most overlooked being Carr coming back.

Of course not. But that seems to be the problem. With a fresh Defensive system and recruits that can no longer be blamed anymore as Croom's, We wil find out quick if he has improved.

Key game obviously, and i think you mentiond earlier, is the OKST game. If the defense shows improvement vs the spread, that will be a good sign.

I think the Auburn game is bigger than Ok State. We cant afford to lose to Auburn

Not sure why people are saying Mullens, he's gone to three straight bowls and won 24 games in that time. Only Jackie Sherril from 1998-2000 has had a better three year run at MSU. 2010 was their second highest final ranking ever.

Let's stop acting like he isnt meeting expectations, historically speaking he's exceeding them.

Exactamundo

Mullen is a hero right now- people saying hotseat is absolutely hilarious. He would have to have 2 losing seasons in a row before its even talked about

That's the thing -- it already showed signs of life vs the spread in the Northwestern game. Of course, it was hard to see on the scoreboard with all the INTs that Russell threw -- and that was still Wilson's scheme with Collins calling plays. I'm very optimistic about his ability to make in-game adjustments with scheme and playcalling. You could actually see him making changes during that game to take various strengths away -- and more importantly than anything, he actually attacked instead of trying to be a read/react defense against teams that out-talent us.

The OK State game is definitely a huge barometer for us going forward...

I agree that the OK state game is big, but so is the AU game.. We lose both and 5-7 is a likely outcome for our season.

My prediction is 6-6

LINK

ETA: the 4 I am most unsure about are the OKSU, AU, Arky, and OM games.. I think we win 2 of the 4, not necessarily the ones I put in that link

We expect to be bowling. I expect to be better on offense and defense than we were last year even if it isn't reflected in our overall record. I expect to see that on the statsheet -- particularly attacking things like TFL and TFLallowed, sacks, qb hurries, etc...

No one will get too wooly about our offense until Mullen proves he can handle playcalling it through a pocket passer though. He did it well with Leak -- but for some reason he never took it over last year when Koenning was faltering. This year, he is supposed to have a much more active role in playcalling. We'll see.

The bad thing is -- if you said right now that something happened and Russell was out, but Dak will be 100% and Cord Sandberg will be @ MSU in the fall, our win predictions and general outlook on the season would start growing wool. We're THAT confident in Mullen's ability to run the read option offense effectively through him. He'll be the first QB we've had that truly fits the offense as a true dual threat. Him+Robinson in the option isn't even going to be fair...

I almost think we could actually go an offseason without anyone getting fired. I would say Mizzou might be the only school to fire the HC. A couple more could have warm seats in 14, but that's it.

I say 7-5

But 6-6 is certainly a possibility given the schedule. Anything less than 6-6 is unacceptable

My guess is that Mullen will be slighytly warm by seasons end...but again...Moo State doesnt have big expectations...the only problem for Mullen is the instate rival school has hit the mark in recruiting and media attention...they could start really dominating too much for MSUs boosters but that would be a year off.

Mizzou is the other...but they arent expecting too much either. With so many new coaches oiout there...dont expect much in changes at all...Id say only Pinkel as an outside shot...but I think we may see the SEC stand pat with all their coaches after this year which begs to question when did that last go down? Richt & Miles may catch some heat if their teams disappoint as I think they might...but nowhere near enough for pitchforks and torches.
