They've never been acceptable. Well... maybe in the 70s/80s they might've been but since the mid to late 90s onward gay jokes haven't really been the domain of 'polite' company. Even in the 90s when anti-gay was all the rage it wasn't acceptable - happened a lot just like black, pollack, catholic, jewish, and 'dumb blonde/dumb women' jokes but the fact that they happened a lot among college kids pushing the envelop and/or while guys out drinking, gambling and shooting the shite at the local Elks lodge isn't the same thing as acceptable.
Even back then people knew they weren't acceptable - it was just that fewer people would call someone out of racial, religious, sexist, or homophobic jokes. When we're more equal as a nation we'll probably be able to joke about these things more freely but until then the prohibition will remain.

Actually in College Station, we're making pretty big strides towards not using the word "retards" in any context. It's degrading and insulting.
I cringe each time I see it on this site.

. This is an issue that's close to my heart; but I understand most of you don't think twice about tossing around that language . But even if you pause to think for 2 or 3 seconds before saying/typing it, at least you're considering it. And I think that's a good start.

Exactly. If you are getting your feelings hurt out there, you need to find a different sport. Threads like this really illustrate who actually played football and who didn't. People worrying about this clearly have no idea what it is like on the field and at the bottom of those piles.
To answer the OP, when you can breed Political Correctness into children, then this will stop. When we can literally genetically engineer people to think a certain way. There is no other sure solution than liberal paradise like that.

Now that the retards, gays, and redskins get so much airtime its time we ban the g word. Also I'd like to get the ball rolling on getting Notre dame's mascot changed because its an offensive stereotype.

It will always be acceptable to say what you want in this country, the Constitution gives us free speech, it does not gives us freedom from being offended. Anyone who doesn't like that can feel free to move.
I think people who are VERBALLY mean to others who have done them no harm are lame, and better be able to take the same in return. But it doesn't matter. We all have the right to state our opinions. Penalties (losing jobs etc) for doing so need to be challenged in court because they are against the supreme law of our country.
