But that can't be! That invalidates Beer Bryant's entire argument!

I agree Id rather have points, but I think yards is a much better statistical indication of the actual performance of the team.

I'll take winning ugly over losing pretty any day of the week.

And to cycle back to the original question

Auburn 2010 was an average defense.

I agree but when they have more yards they have a better chance of winning.

And if that defense is average this one is below average.

when you have more points you always win. So yea, i'll rely on points not yards.

Points can change due to turnover, field position, tempo of play, etc. Yards are a FAR better indicator of a defense.

disagree

some teams play a style designed to prevent big plays and they become much harder to score on in the red zone. LSU in 2011 had an elite defense but often gave up big yards... between the 20s, not in the red zone.

If I had enough time I would do research by looking at teams records and comparing to their margin of victory and how many more or less yards they gained on opponents. Unfortunately I don't have enough time.

2010 Oregon- 54.3 PPG
2013 FSU- 52.6 PPG

Must be an even bigger difference in this guy's eyes

I've just done some preliminary research. It reveals that the teams who score more points than their opponents win their games.

There are many teams who n average score less points per game than their opponent but have winning records, and vice versa. Im not looking at a silly one game sample size cause thats not a good statistical indicator.

you really think that is a rebuttal? if you win a lot of close games and get blown out once that doesn't negate all your success. Teams like BCS NCs 1998 Tennessee and 2002 tOSU thrived on winning close games.

It is a matter of style. If you are a team like the Patriots who doesn't care how you win just so you win you are a quality team whatever your points for/against for the season. You are not a lesser team just because the Saints or whoever had your number one night and put up a bunch of points or yards or whatever.

As Parcells says, "You are what your RECORD says you are"

Ed,

Auburn is going to run on FSU and they will gain yards and score points. Can FSU's defense do what the two best rushing defenses in the SEC couldn't do? I guess we'll have to wait & see what happens in four weeks......

Winston will pick apart Auburn's defense while FSU's extremely athletic defense, which is similar to LSU's, will stop Auburn at least a few times. They will make Marshall throw which will result in INT's for FSU

Jesus - this sounds like Mark May over and over.....

"AU is one dimensional....can't pass.....won't be able to beat Bama like that b/c they will eat you alive.....can't beat Mizzou with their speed defense unless you have a pound in your face run game like Bama's, which AU does not..."

where are you getting this stuff? i'm not saying anything like that.

If you have two teams who play each other, have the same record (at least within half a game) and one team wins you should assume the team that won the game is the better team.

I just disagree with your idea that total yardage is somehow a superior indicator of the worthiness of the respective teams. If they change the game of football to make yards count as points then I will reconsider.
