really if we're talking the academic side here it all depends on what you want to do

both schools are great at what they do and neither is fighting with Duke or Vandy for Academic prestige

we're public schools in a broke arse deep south state providing quality education and damn good grad schools - nothing more nothing less

Alabama is the same

everyone reps the Law School and all that but that wasn't most

hell when it came to grad school Alabama kids go to Auburn for Pharmacy and what not and Auburn kids would go to Alabama for Law School

both sides have nursing though I think Bama's is a lil more established but nursing is such a big thing throughout the state - you can't walk down the street in Birmingham without running into a nurse

Exactly. State schools are really state schools with the exception of a few. My political science degree from Auburn would carry just as much weight from any state school in the SEC.

and there's bama fans like 12thFairway who has his complete self worth wrapped up in bama football.

Let me describe him as luckily I have never met him.

His Sunday best is a bama button up.
He has bama flags flying year round on his truck.
He has an american , rebel, and bama flag flying from his mobile home.
He honestly thinks he better than people because he cheers for Alabama.

I know a lot of good people that are bama fans because they realize it is just football. However, you have stupid fricks like this guy who thinks he is superior.

I don't know all this calling other people out and stuff but as far as those car flags go I put some up on my truck once going to a game and after ten minutes pulled them back in and never rode with them again

that shite is annoying

Until saban got to bama, Tuscaloosa was a total shithole of a campus compared to AU. Saban has helped to get the campus up to AU levels, but as far as the institution goes, it is lipstick on a pig.

So let me get this straight - you think Fayetteville, Arkansas oozes "southern charm" more than Tuscaloosa, Alabama? Really?

You obviously have not been to Fayetteville. Because of its distance to most of the other schools in the SEC, its one of the least-attended road trips. However, Fayetteville is arguably one of the nicer cities in the conference. Downtown Fayetteville in my opinion is second only to Athens. You really should get there. I was shocked myself.

quote:

Shocker, those are 4 of the 5 largest cities in the state as well. Tuscaloosa has crime like other cities of 90K+ have crime.

Those numbers are adjusted for population, bud. For every 100,000 people there are nearly 520 violent crimes committed each year in Tuscaloosa. Also for every 100,000 people, there are 241 violent crimes committed in Auburn each year.

You are twice as likely to be involved in a violent crime in Tuscaloosa than you are in Auburn. It has nothing to do with population and everything to do with crime.

quote:

All in all, good luck with helping your kid pick their college. But if you aren't going to let them go to Alabama for the reasons you have mentioned so far then that is a pretty ignorant way to mentor them.

My kids are free to choose whichever university they desire to attend. They are more than welcome to choose Alabama. My hope is that they will attend UGA. If it were up to me and they did not choose UGA, I'd prefer they choose Auburn over Alabama simply because I think it would be a better experience for them. But it will be their decision.

There are far more reasons for me to feel that way that the ones already mentioned.

Here are the SEC schools ranked for average mid-career salary for graduates with Bachelor Degrees according to payscale.com:

$102,000: Vanderbilt
$98,300: Texas A&M
$89,800: Auburn
$86,300: Florida
$85,600: LSU
$83,600: Georgia
$81,900: Missouri
$80,700: Arkansas
$79,600: Tennessee
$79,200: Mississippi State
$78,700: Kentucky
$76,900: Alabama
$73,100: South Carolina
$71,400: Ole Miss

I could go on with more evidence. But everything I study points to Auburn offering a better experience and better potential.

Obviously both are great schools. It's just in my opinion Auburn is a better school if you reside in the state of Alabama.

shite Saban got to Alabama when The Strip was being gentrified to hell and back

barely any bars left there now

after The Booth went away half the fraternities went into cocaine withdrawal (just kidding Gallette's was still open)

Maybe, but let's not act like there aren't any Auburn fans like that. Hell, one of my Auburn friends who graduated from Auburn thinks dressing up is cargo pants and an Under Armour Auburn polo.

No question Alabama has more of them in this state.

I started at UA in 2006, before Saban got there. There was already a ton of construction on campus and it hasn't stopped. Everything they have done in the last 10 years was planned at least 20 years ago.

Tuscaloosa has some bad parts, but it's all on the west side of town, far from where any students would ever go. You aren't in any danger by living in Tuscaloosa.

That's also skewed based on what career you go into. Hell, I fully plan on making more than $76,900 before reaching the midpoint of my career.

Well, and Alberta before the tornado.

It's kind of dumb to compare the cities of Auburn and Tuscaloosa anyway. Tuscaloosa was a city before the University was founded and has long standing industry there. Auburn was a land grant school and was founded for the sole purpose of the college. Of course the demographics are going to be vastly different.
