Auburn fans have convinced themselves that there is some sort of moral high ground to be claimed by being fans of the 2nd tier Alabama football team.

Been to 3 Iron Bowls in Auburn and have never spent one penny in Auburn. It was difficult to plan to go there and NOT spend any money but a group of 6 did it once and two groups of 4 did it twice. We executed all three trips without having to spend one dime in Lee County. Bama won 2 of those games in 09 and 11.
I hated the town, the stadium, and everything about Lee County, the city of Auburn, and Auburns campus. It's cheap and second rate.
Good job Harvey. I thought they gave the work release guys some spending money, but obviously not?

Gumps are dumb, Aubies are neat.
Common space is shared. Friction is inevitable.

it is pretty simple. They are in a lifelong feud. Think Hatfields v. McCoys. But, even intermarriage hasn't ended the feud. Never will.
Alabama is the Hatfields. Auburn is the McCoys.
It really is this way:
LINK
And those of us who are not a part of either family but live in their state, we are very confusing to them. It is really interesting to observe that some of them cannot imagine that you live in Alabama and are not an Auburn or Alabama fan. Some try to make you choose. Schools have spirit days where kids can wear "their favorite team shirt". Mine got sent home by the principal because they did not wear Alabama or Auburn. True story.

First you suck at this
2nd, u must be 16 because if you think the crux of this rivalry is because of the last few years...well
3rd- There were many issues that have brought this to where it is. You don't have the in-state so you don't understand. Familiarity breeds contempt. Issues were beginning in 1892 going forward:
Money that would be distributed between two schools
Per diems for transportation
Where the game would be played
scheduling
Each trying to establish themselves as dominant state team.
The severity of hate between two fanbases. Powers that be wanted it to cool off. It did for 40 years.
Bama's reluctance to ever play Auburn again. This led to the state government having sessions regarding the game. Alabama was eventually strong armed into playing as some Auburn grads in the state house said they would cut off state funding if we didn't.
Auburn wanting to move the game to a home and home.
Auburn somehow someway trying to say they are our equal
Bama is the school for the Alabama elite
Auburn is the school for the states common man
There was lots of stuff but these are a few of the things that really kicked it off. Biggest thing is its instate. Give you my family for example
Dad- Auburn
Mom-Bama
Me-Bama
Sister-Auburn
Sister-Auburn
Sister-Bama
Grandads- Auburn
Grandmothers-Bama
When you have split families like we do in Alabama and you live with these people and see them every day it sux to be on the losing end. After you've heard the horn tooting for a year you are so fed up with it.
Winning the Iron Bowl is best described this way:
You don't feel joy, you feel relief.

Bama cheats, and Auburn thinks all their fans graduated from Auburn. That's what 90% of the arguments devolve to.
That about covers it.

too many things to list all. Primarily it's about in-state and having to live 365 with fans chirping about beating the other team. To the victor goes the spoils, and the victor in this rivalry makes certain to enjoy said spoils 365 days per year - and neither side is consistently gracious toward the other in that victory.
you've also got the stark contrasts of the two schools in general in terms of what they are known for educationally. Due to those contrasts, each school attracts different personality types (AU - engineering, agriculture, vet, etc...Bama - business, law, communication, etc). By logic, those different personality types clash over many things, but the most ferocious of them is the Iron Bowl.
finally, you've got one school that has a clearly better history in football while the other school has made the actual game itself very competitive in terms of Ws & Ls. The one with the superior history acts with a superiority complex that likely isn't fair or kind toward the other. The school with less historical success has some who show inferiority complex and are constantly trying to prove/force respect - respect that many operating with the superiority complex will never give. It becomes a cycle.

I'm a UGA alum who lives in Birmingham. I've been to games in Auburn and in Tuscaloosa. I've spent time on both campi both on gamedays and non-gamedays.
I can tell you that the town of Auburn is a much nicer place than the hell hole that is Tuscaloosa. Tuscaloosa is one of the worst towns in the state of Alabama. The Alabama campus is nice, but I think Auburn's is on par.
If my future child decides to stay in-state, I would much prefer her to go to Auburn over Alabama. It's a better school and a better environment. Also seems to be much safer. Auburn is the fastest growing area in the state of Alabama. There is a reason for that.

I've been to 2 iron bowls (uga bye weeks), both in tuscaloosa. Honestly it didn't seem any different than any other rivalry game. I was expecting fights, cussing, near brawls, battery hurling, etc. I didn't see any of that...just a big atmosphere game like youd' see for any other big rivalry.
I was a bit disappointed.

I mean honestly anyone that hits another human being over a sporting event is a giant douchenozzle regardless of what team they cheer for
luckily the majority of Alabama and Auburn fans realize this
hell these days your more likely to see the TPD beatin on a few of our own
