What is Malzahn's philosophy in recruiting?

From a non Auburn fan it appears he goes after the best players available regardless of position. Auburn's LBs have been one of the worst groups in the SEC the last 5-6 seasons. Why did Malzahn not bring in one true LB in the class? It appears from his recruiting Auburn will continue to be Auburn under Malzahn. Good offense with a bottom of the league defense. This has to drive old school Auburn fans crazy with the historically great defenses that program has produced.

We recruited 4 Lbers last year, and run a system where only two true LBers are on the field at one time. Our issues have been depth on the DL, not at LB.

I don't follow recruiting, but our list says Tre Threat is a linebacker.

You guys just hired a new DC. Are you gonna run the same system with Steele? Whose system is it?

And also, your LBs have been jokes for the last decade.

Yea but they're old and in the way. Just like most people who don't accept change.

Auburn has had some good linebackers over time, but never at the same time. Josh Bynes and Cass McKinzy are definitely the best ones since 2008. Kris Frost catches a lot of hate, but he was actually pretty good, too.

Bynes was actually good and might still be in the NFL. Mckinzy played good at times throughout his career but seemed to take a step back last year.

Frost had talent, but usually played like crap.

Then you have guys like Holland, Eltoro, and Trey Blackmon.

I think AU's defense improves this year without the raging maniac trying to de-recruit the whole team all year

Look at our LB class two previous years. Look at our defensive line recruiting this year. Issues were addressed.

I think we need a couple of more to linebackers, but adding guys that aren't better than what we already have isn't going to help. We tried to get a couple good ones and only got one.

Malzahn's "genius" gets in his own way. Yes he recruits the best player regardless of position, because he believes that he can just mold a system to fit his players. Well and good if he HAS the best players (Cam Newton), but as we saw last season, if his all star turns out to be a bust his team sucks.

I doubt he lasts more than two more years down there.

I have the direct opposite question about Saban's recruiting. It seems he recruits 5-7 LBs every year. I know some are converted to DLs, but does he process those who do not fit his Defense. He always recruited big name DBs, but depth at that position has seemed to effect that secondary.

We went after good LBs they just didn't want to come to Auburn.

One day, hopefully soon, when Saban is gone you'll find out again what it's like to not just be able to hand pick your class every year.

We started 2 freshmen in the secondary last year, had another freshman play a ton and we had one of the better groups in college football.

Our depth there (along with LSU) will be better than anybody in CFB next year.

Doesn't that kind of prove his point?

We have good depth, we sign lots of good players, we are good on the field. We were deep last year, we just had a lot of 5-star, elite kids that were ready to play. We also had 3-4 guys who had 3 years experience playing backup roles.

What was the point exactly?
