Short man syndrome. No amount of coaching elite talent or winning championships will ever change the fact that Saban, literally but not figuratively, looks up to someone like Paul Finebaum even when wearing his shoe lifts. Being vertically challenged is an every day thing for Saban so he is relentless in proving himself better than taller coaches, pretty much all of them and particularly the ones who tower over Saban even though they are of average or even below average height.

What, lol! That defense is anything but simple. I've seen several former players mention how easy the transition was, because the playbook at Bama was bigger and more complicated.
It is definitely about the Jimmy's and Joe's, up to a certain point. But the talent levels between the elite teams is marginal. This is when his attention to detail makes him the best. Yes, he's a workaholic. But it's his detail oriented nature that makes him the best.

Les just seems cool. But he hasn't had a similar level of success as the other two, even with a similar talent level.

Regarding Saban's personal characteristics, it would be work ethic, drive and attention to detail IMO.

He's the best at college football. In the NFL, not so much.

I figured someone would beat me to it. But I'll give an example.
Bama knew about Clemson's tendency to leave an outside gap at the frontline on kickoffs. They noticed it when watching film. When the time as right, and when they saw the opportunity, they pounced on it. Most other teams didn't consider an inside kick like that, even though it had been there all season.

I'm going with the obvious answer. His brain sits so low to the ground that there's very little effort required to circulate his cold, reptilian blood. It's simple physics, people.

He does many things very well.
great recruiter
teaches his players the proper technique and more importantly develops them.
I think this is the most important, he teaches his player to do their job. Don't worry about the guy next to you, do your job and do it the best.

The intangibles (I think). His players compete every play, and that's not just having a talented group. That comes from being obsessed with preparation and pushing your players to their limit during practice. Maybe it just comes down to the stress he imposes on his teams that translates into victories on the field.
The tangibles (obvious, and probably not exhaustive). He has great coordinators and knows how to recruit like a son of a bitch.
That "process" trickles down from Saban to his coaching/administrative staff to his players on down to the people fixing food/drinks to the folks working the phones and on down to the guys picking up the trash & washing the towels.

Saban is the best all time at the details and stacking the deck in his favor. He's relentless on the recruiting trail, fights for rules changes that help his system, bends the rules just enough, etc.
It's one of the reasons he's successful in college, but it's highly unlikely he would ever have the same level of success in the NFL. The NFL is structured in a way that levels the playing filed and it's more about the X's and O's on game day when compared to college.
