He recruits great players and then keeps it simple. Play great defense, especially in the front 7, run the ball on offense, and make ball control the #1 priority at the QB position. And never allow any player to become larger than the team. Other coaches try similar things but then abandon it too quickly when things don't go as planned. Saban has a system that works and he sticks to it.

LSU made him, or should I say Louisiana made him. That one great recruiting class with Clayton, etc. was the biggest achievement that lead to everything else. His process is also a big part of it. His process wouldn't matter, though, if he didn't have such a drive to make it happen.

His hunger for perfection is the answer.

Just looked it up. 2 polls has Southern Cal as the national champs & 2 had Louisiana State. I think the ones that counted had LSU as the champs. What threw me off was I saw an ESPN presents on Southern Cal in that era & they were saying Southern Cal won the national championship. (Which is bull crap if you compare how tough the SEC is compared to whatever the hell conf Southern Cal is in)

For startes you have to understand he is a good Xs and Os guy. Was DC under Bill Belichick he knows a lot about defense.

He puts a huge emphasis and details and discipline. Which in my mind can make up for a lack of talent.

But on top of that he has the talent. A disciplined talented team is going to be hard to beat every time.

He is a very very good coach, and his recruiting only got better when he returned from Miami and was anointed the best college coach in the world. Partner that with a traditional powerhouse with deep pockets, and inroads in almost every state with talent. and you have a pretty solid machine.

I always say it is unfair to compair Les to Nick Saban, and that is because really it is unfair to compair anyone to Nick Saban. Anyone

The intangibles (I think). His players compete every play, and that's not just having a talented group. That comes from being obsessed with preparation and pushing your players to their limit during practice. Maybe it just comes down to the stress he imposes on his teams that translates into victories on the field.

The tangibles (obvious, and probably not exhaustive). He has great coordinators and knows how to recruit like a son of a bitch.

Saban has a template for every position on the team. Players almost always fit that mold.
Look at the 3* players he brings in, red shirts and makes players who are key parts of the team. He is a master at looking at a Sr. In high school and seeing what he can become.
Besides that ability add the work ethic he becomes the GOAT.

LSU fans should just be grateful they had him for a while. Saban put LSU on the map.

I know we all laugh at the "process", but it is exactly what makes him successful. He has found the combination to yearly success and it requires everyone to buy in.

Once he proved it works the floodgates opened and they have upgraded in many phases. Their marketing is top notch. Now you add in all the players that go pro and high in the draft, and now it just feeds itself.

Yes, they have benefitted from some luck too, but every team does and has to have to win a championship. Regardless of championships look at his record at Bama.

Like I said, Saban has figured the path to excellence and all you can do is offer respect. As I do to Les Miles as well for the consistency in winning. He just hasn't figured out turning it into more championships similar to Richt. Still impressive though.

discipline. if you notice, Bama always has the fewest penalties in the SEC. they are regimented and don't take unnecessary risks.

Best evaluator of talent this side of Jimmy Johnson

Players are put in correct positions where they can thrive. Lots of players change positions with him and then become stars.

Preparation. There is nothing a team does he's not prepared for.

Hands on. I had a chance to visit one practice. He is all up in the defense. Every detail is scrutinized and he is NEVER satisfied.
He had punt returners just catching punts that day. Just one rep after another and one returner extended his arms to catch a punt and Saban went apeshite. He used every 4 letter word known to man 3 times over. Told the returner to get off his field. Never saw the kid again.

Biggest one- he is THE voice. Nothing, nothing happens that he doesn't believe in. He is the beginning and end of the program and everybody from the d coordinator to the grounds crew knows it and nobody questions him. Nothing is done by committee. He chews his assistants arses more than players. There is one voice and he leaves no doubt he is in charge.

He plays ball the right way. Stop the run, Run the ball and don't turn it over. Be sound in the kicking game. Simple formula that has always won football games. Stop the run, Run the football.

His extraordinary parenting skills prepared him for this. He learned how the justice system and substance abuse world operates. All of this helped make him the shining beacon of character and integrity he is.

REC and Emmert. Stick him in an average situation and he is just above average. Let him cheat as he please and have boosters running around helping buy recruits and any coach in the nation would have the success he has at Bama. Urban Meyer probably wouldn't have lost a game after year 2.

All jokes aside, its the process. Everything Saban does is about making every person associated with the program perform to the maximum of their abilities. From the starting quarterback to the janitorial staff. If you work or play for the program, he demands excellence.

The belief is when you structure a program around "the process," everything else will take care of itself.

Absolutely. The 60 minutes a few years back was really eye opening. He is so invested into the process that anybody else who isn't will be weeded out. After 5 years of that, you are a well oiled machine. Eddie Jackson in that episode was a perfect example.

would nick Saban be as good if he didn't crash and burn with the Cleveland Browns and belichick

He won the MAC at Toledo in his first head coaching gig so I think he was a pretty good coach before Cleveland.
