has anyone mentioned that he is a complete sociopath?

Kinda kidding, but the guy demands excellence. He doesn't just say it either, he walks the walk. His discipline and structure is what puts him over the top. He isn't one of those people who say oh well you'll get it tomorrow, he is the one that says you get it today or never, because today is the only day that matters.

Stick him in an average situation and he is just above average. Let him cheat as he please and have boosters running around helping buy recruits and any coach in the nation would have the success he has at Bama

I'm about 99% sure you don't actually believe this. Nick Saban would have won the SEC last year with just about any team save Vandy, and even then he'd probably win the east. If you do actually believe that, you're an idiot and there is no help for you.

Recruiting and his players say he's an incredible motivator.

His track record of hiring assistant coaches is pretty good. Sans Applewhite and Steele.

There is very little parity within the SEC. We've all seen what Saban can do in a league with parity.

Coaches in the SEC are facing an "uphill" battle against Bama and the league offices which are heavily influenced by Bama. The media days event in 2013 was a "HUGE" wake-up call for me. Sumlin came into the league and upset the "apple cart". The league quickly stepped in to try to change the rules to benefit the Bama program. They didn't "officially" change the rules, but it was clear the referees called the games differently going forward.

There are also several random "SEC" football only recruiting and transfer rules that don't exist anywhere else in the NCAA and only stand to reduce parity within the conference.

Here's hoping that it was a 10 year deal that started right before he jumped off of that sinking ship of a job as the Dolphins head coach.

would nick Saban be as good if he didn't crash and burn with the Cleveland Browns and belichick

His last season in Cleveland they went 11-5 and went to the Playoffs, then in 1995 he left and went to Michigan State (Belichick's last year in which they collapsed after the announcement was made about the move to Baltimore).

He understands that "you can't make chicken salad out of chicken shite"; great recruiter and understands how to teach his system on defense.

His defense is complex. Lots of checks and handoffs depending on formations, etc.

Spread makes him have to simplify, but not just any spread. A spread with Cam, JFF, Tebow, Nick Marshall, etc works best bc the QB has to be accounted for running and passing.

In general though, CNS is a great coach when he has top talent. There are no miracles out on the football field. It's the Jimmies and the Joes, not the X's and the O's most of the time.

I agree with your post except for the last part. Saban went undefeated in the regular season in 2008 with mostly Shula's recruits. That team had very little talent except for a few freshmen and sophomores that Saban had brought in.

If he's like the one coach I had who was one of the top in his sport... it has to be being an overbearing a-hole. He also used to have a huge recruiting advantage before he moved to college. Generally an unlikeable prick, but damn he coached a lot of Olympians and American record holders. Not much taller than Saban and equally mediocre in his competing days just my 2¢.

Edit: coached us to 30% of our 2012 olympic medals, but what do I know about elite coaches.

So being "an overbearing a-hole" is the reason he's such a great coach, huh? you're a fricking idiot.

Best evaluator of talent this side of Jimmy Johnson

Players are put in correct positions where they can thrive. Lots of players change positions with him and then become stars.

Preparation. There is nothing a team does he's not prepared for.

Hands on. I had a chance to visit one practice. He is all up in the defense. Every detail is scrutinized and he is NEVER satisfied.
He had punt returners just catching punts that day. Just one rep after another and one returner extended his arms to catch a punt and Saban went apeshite. He used every 4 letter word known to man 3 times over. Told the returner to get off his field. Never saw the kid again.

Biggest one- he is THE voice. Nothing, nothing happens that he doesn't believe in. He is the beginning and end of the program and everybody from the d coordinator to the grounds crew knows it and nobody questions him. Nothing is done by committee. He chews his assistants arses more than players. There is one voice and he leaves no doubt he is in charge.

He plays ball the right way. Stop the run, Run the ball and don't turn it over. Be sound in the kicking game. Simple formula that has always won football games. Stop the run, Run the football.

This is an excellent assessment. People wouldn't believe how much he mirrors Coach Bryant in his coaching philosophy.

He's driven and detail oriented to the point of autism it seems (no, I don't think he's actually autistic). He is wired in a way where he cannot stand failure, and as a head college football coach at a major school, he can control every aspect of the program to ensure that success.

He didn't have the same level of control in the NFL, and it undermined his ability to succeed. He wasn't terrible in the NFL, but he wasn't special either.

Saban was smart enough to understand who the power brokers throughout the state are, how the machine works, and how to communicate with the REC while keeping a plausible deniability distance from them while he works that relationship with Emmert at the NCAA, and getting the administration to fall in line at home. That coupled with the fact that he is highly organized and motivated and you get the dynasty he has built today.

He's heartless. That's what seperates him from everyone else. Miles, Urbs etc have feelings and care about players in general

Sabs not so much. It's a negative but when you win like he does at this stage in his career fans accept it easier.
