Stay in Tunica and make the drive, cuts down on the bullet holes in your ride.

Memphis makes South Atlanta look like a nice safe suburb.
How often do you go? What's your business for going? And when is the last time you've been?
Memphis is not nearly as bad in the downtown and mid-town areas as it used to be. A whole lot of gentrification has been going on the last 10 years. Downtown is now fun and generally safe. I actually feel more safe walking around Memphis Downtown than I do walking around NOLA.
Obviously in most metropolitan cities, stay away from the ghettos. The liberty bowl is a day game so you'll be safe for tailgating. Just head back to your downtown hotel after the game and party.
It's kinda hard to not eat good BBQ in Memphis. My favorite is Central BBQ.

If anyone wants to get a good Burger, just hit up Dyer's. It's a little Memphis secret. Many locals don't even know about it.
Cooked in the same grease since the early 1900's!

Central BBQ is my favorite as well.

For BBQ The Rendevouz has some of the best ribs. Germantown Commissary is very good as well as Central BBQ.
If you have kids definately take them to the Zoo. It's one of 4 in the US with Pandas. They opened a new exibit last year with Grizzlies, wolfs, elk and a few other things.
Also downtown is Gus's Fried Chicken. It is wonderful. I think it's on front street.

I can't believe I forgot to suggest Gus' Fried Chicken. Hands down my favorite place to go in Memphis.
Where else can you get hot, crispy, juicy chicken served with a 40?

Central BBQ (the original is on Central Ave). The BEST bbq-and they have homemade chips that are out of this world. And awesome mac and cheese. Really, everything there is awesome!

We stayed in Memphis in 2008 when we played Ole Miss. Went to Rendezvous and then out on Beale. Had a good time, and felt pretty safe as well. Maybe the alcohol did the trick, but I had a good time.

Beale is safe, just don't head up north or south.... or east or west

All depends on where you're staying. If you are downtown you aren't going to want to go all the way to Germantown to eat at the Commissary, esp when Rendezvous(downtown) and Blues City(on Beale) are both right there. Another BBQ joint I'd mention though is Tom's BBQ, look it up on Food Network. Guy Fieri did his diners driveins and dives show from there. Rib Tips are supposed to be awesome. And as others have said, Central BBQ is good and is pretty close to the stadium.
Gus's Fried Chicken is downtown and serves some pretty good chicken. Huey's has locations all over Memphis and serves up a pretty damn good burger if you're in the mood for that one night.
There's BBQ joints all over the city, but like I mentioned above, where to suggest depends on where you're going to stay. AND yes it's normally absolutely freezing cold so bank on that.
P.S. if you start seeing lots of pawn shops, gun stores, liquor stores, and check cashing places you might want to lock the doors and turn around and head a different direction.

Dyer's >>>>>> Hueys
Like I said, many people in memphis have no idea about it

Beale street is pretty safe after the game, the cops block off beale and have metal detectors at the entrances. The standard memphis test we used was, if you've seen the area of memphis your in on either the blindside or the first 48 don't stop at stop signs or slow down, also avoid eye contact.
