The main difference was that the LSU fans weren't crying about the rematch, while all the FSU fans and Bowden were howling about how unfair it was to have to play us twice. Nationally the matchup didn't draw a ton of press because ASU would have won the title if they had beaten Ohio State and UF won. So it wasn't a natty title game when the rematch was created.

In 1996, FSU beat Florida 24-21 in the last game of the regular season. Nebraska lost in the Big 12 title game and Florida got a rematch in the national title game, blowing out FSU 52-20. I was only 10 years old when that game was played and I am curious if it was as controversial as the LSU/Bama rematch was. The scenarios are eerily similar with a close game followed by a blowout in the rematch.

Didn't read this thread.

But there was controversy around the 96 championship game. I believe that was the Bowl Coalition, or something like that, and they bypassed the conference tie ins and selected who played for the NC game. Bobby Bowden fought hard against playing a team they already beat.

But I do not believe it was as controversial as the '11 Bama/LSU rematch just because of the sheer amount of media coverage now. You're right though, very similiar circumstances.

No one said its a requirement... but its surely a justification for LSU fans to be a little upset

I would think that LSU would be more upset because of the way that they were beaten and not by the fact that it was a non conference champion. Would you want a lesser team to have been there, just so you could have won? I don't think that LSU would have beaten anyone that day. Something was wrong, and they were just not playing up to their standard performance that day. I don't understand why people put down Bama because they played in that game. The chips just fell that way, and Bama was ranked number 2 and was able to play in the game. What should Bama have done....refuse to play? They did play and they won, and Bama is the national champion for 2011, so get over it.

What rubs Lsu fans the wrong way is the fact that the game of the century was supposed to tell who was going to the ship. Bama lost then started crying and begging for a rematch. We make it to the SEC championship while bama gets to sit back, get healthy and game plan against us for the title. Now we have a four team playoff...

What is funny dumbass. LSU beat Bama at home and fr winning that game they had to beat a top 10 team in their state for the right to play Bama. A team they beat at Bama

There is one thing similar

1. FSU could have just beaten Florida
2. LSU could have just beaten Alabama

so they both are bitching about their own failure. :smh:

Duck face is shown below. It's a weird trend for girls taking pics of themselves in the mirror and usually posted on face book. Men have been known to do it as well sadly.

I'm asking if anyone knows whether FSU fans were in an uproar over the rematch or not? You know, stuff like "they didn't deserve to be there", etc. Are FSU fans still pissed about that game or have they moved on and accepted Florida as the legitimate national champion?

The system we have today is much better than back then. Today, we have a system that tries to pit the most deserving teams together for the NC. Back then, hell BYU could win a championship by playing their bowl game against a 6-5 regular season Michigan. It was not as controversial, and especially since both were conference champions. In this case, you had a team that was not only not a conference champion playing, but not even a divisional champion. Was Alabama better than Okie St? Hell yeah. Were they more deserving? No

We really needed this thread though, it will solve all of our squabbles.

Bama was the best team in the country last year. No doubt. Best defense I've ever seen in CFB. Doesn't mean they deserved a shot at the title while losing their only hard game. At home and another one loss team has a better resume.

when you have two really good teams, motivation will lie with the team that was beaten the first time.....and a sense of complacency will lie with the team that won the previous match.

It would be awesome if the same scenario happened again this year in reverse order. I'm sure Nov. 3rd will likely be the biggest game of the year in college football, and it would be fitting for bama to come into TS and squeak out a win over LSU...then turn around for the rematch in Miami. I would love to see the gump nation implode should that happen and LSU wins the NC. Make no mistake about it, had the roles been reversed last year, the gump nation would have imploded even more than they did on Nov. 5th.
