If you read the interviews after the game, you'll find that ND ran a very simple defensive scheme. Alabama was smart enough to identify, and ND's coaches weren't smart enough to adjust it.

I think the main factor is depth. ND may have been a talented team, but did they have quality depth?
To beat Bama, you need depth. That's why LSU matches up well with Bama because LSU is one of the few teams with the depth to beat Bama.
Not to mention, I know ND had good wins against Oklahoma and USC, but they struggled against Pitt, BYU, and Purdue. I honestly believe the top half of the SEC could beat them.

They lacked the depth to match Bama and were nowhere near ready to play in a game of that magnitude. Bama's last game was a nail biter against UGA(another team I think would've handled ND quite easily). A lot of players on that roster had also played in last year's championship game. ND's roster had ZERO big game experience to compare with that.
Also, Bama was the most "balanced" offense they faced all year with the best OL unit.
The Sooners could chuck it around but didn't have the OL to protect or run.
The Trojans had their backup QB play the whole game.
And Stanford at the time could run the ball but hadn't established a solid passing game.
And yes, they were out-talented as a team and possibly not as developed(jury is still kinda out on Kelly IMO)

Exactly. See the quote from Jones I posted last page. I really don't think the talent/development was extremely different. Certainly not 28 points different, anyway. Saban's just the best in the biz and it was Kelly's first time on the big stage (that NCG experience also applies to the players, not just coaching staffs).
