College town, and it isn't even close.

Urban campuses suck, not just for visitors, but for the students too.

For football, college towns.

Otherwise it really depends on what you're looking for. For example, campuses like Columbia, NYU, Georgetown, MIT, Northwestern, Washington, etc... they're in really nice parts of the cities they're in or they're very accessible to all the things you want out of a big city (bars, restaurants, pro sports, concerts, museums, all that shite).

A college town in driving distanc to a city. Also having a campus that feels like it is not urban but a part of the city is also great like Baton Rouge or Knoxville

I'm interested to hear an outsiders prospective of folks who have been to Lexington and UK's campus.

What would y'all classify it as? Obviously Lexington is bigger, but campus has a college town feel to it.

It depends on the college. I'm in Austin today. There are tons of restaurants and a big music scene near campus, but also lots of young pan handlers and old druggies that enjoyed the night life a bit too much. I wouldn't want my daughter attending school in an urban setting where I had to worry about non students wandering around the campus at night.

While Georgia Tech is in mid town Atlanta, the campus is nicely separated from the city. I never saw too many thugs wandering around on campus. Maybe they were afraid of us. Usually it is the nerdy guys that go postal and shoot places up.

There are only two urban cities I know in the SEC. Baton Rouge and Nashville. However, is Columbia an urban city or a college town?

Other than Nashville.... Lexington, Baton Rouge and Knoxville are the biggest cities in the SEC.

Atlanta is as urban as it gets. No offense, I like GT, but although it feels separste, you can view the campus from downtown/midtown office buildings. It is similar to Rice University in that regard.

I've heard Athens is the best college town in the SEC.

With few exceptions, urban campuses are better trips. Georgia is one of those few exceptions. Knoxville, Nashville, Lexington and Baton Rouge are all much better trips than the one-horse places most SEC teams call home.

Obviously I'm heavily biased, but Athens fits my tastes perfectly.

I like Athens and was going to say this.

I like a smaller city with in close proximity of a Metro area like Atlanta. It makes the weekend a lot of fun when you can go to bars in either place.

I would prefer if LSU's campus was somewhere in between NOLA and BR. It would make a great trip to go to NOLA for the weekend and ride up for the game. To me Starkville is just too remote.

I prefer college towns, but urban campuses aren't necessarily bad because they're urban. Georgia Tech, for example. There are some terrible college towns as well. While LSU is in a larger city, I don't consider it an "urban" campus. I consider an urban campus to actually be located in the Downtown area, or at least really close-by.

Uh yeah, I prefer College Station over getting murdered and shot at in 3rd Ward where UH is.

+1. Sometimes you need to escape and really have a night out, especially if you're not from anywhere near campus.

College towns are good when you're in undergrad. But after you're about 21 or 22 they are just way too boring. I'd shoot myself if I had to live in a place like Tuscaloosa or Auburn now.
