Pete Fiutak with an interesting nugget in light of all the hand wringing over our 2023 schedule: LINK

TLDR:
22 of the 30 teams UGA faced the past 2 seasons went bowling.

Compared to other repeat champions:
UGA 2021-2022: 22 of 30 (73%)
Bama 2011-2012: 16 of 27 (59%)
Nebraska 1994-1995: 12 of 25 (48%)
Oklahoma 1955-1956: 4 of 21 (19%)

To be fair, I feel like there were fewer bowl games in the mid 90s and there were only a handful in the 50s.

Georgia plays Florida = easy schedule
Florida plays Georgia = tough schedule
Funny how that works.

I'd say the back to back titles help quite a bit

There were but as Fiutak notes, Oklahoma’s repeat holds the dubious honor of only facing 4 teams in 2 years that finished with a winning record (including only 1 team in 1955 that had more than 4 wins)

We have a weak schedule.

Part of it is Georgia Tech's fault for being so limp wristed in football.

Part of it is being told by the league office to cancel the Oklahoma game.

But the bottom line is we have a weak schedule. No selective data set can make a convincing argument otherwise.

This year, yes. The past 2 years, no.

Let’s say we do the unprecedented and go 3 in a row. Looking at our 2023 schedule, I’d wager 10/15 we would play still make a bowl game. That’d be a 3 year run of facing 71% bowl teams.

and like you said, its not UGA's fault, and UGA has taken full advantage of it, so who cares? They took care of business in the playoffs against the best teams in the country and won two titles in a row.

I offer no criticism of Georgia's well-earned title, but this is a meaningless measure of a schedule. Anyone with a pulse plays in a bowl game these days. Can't compare to past eras.

I mean weren't they inviting teams with only 5 wins to bowls last year?

Well, the # of Bowl games and eligibility has changed significantly, so I'm not sure how relevant that data point really is, especially for the 90s and 50s comparisons.

From wiki:
quote:

The Rose Bowl was the only major college bowl game in 1930. By 1940, there were five major college bowl games: the Rose Bowl, the Sugar Bowl (1935), the Cotton Bowl Classic (1937), the Orange Bowl (1935), and the Sun Bowl (1935). By 1950, the number had increased to eight games. This figure of eight bowl games persisted through 1960, but by 1970 the number had increased again, to 11 games. The number continued to increase, to 15 games in 1980, to 19 games in 1990, 25 games in 2000, 35 games in 2010, and 41 games by 2015 (40 games plus two teams playing a second game to determine the National Champion).

While it's tougher than this season, it's not tougher across the board. It's really just Bama and Clemson.

The reality is SC was ranked ahead of Texas last season, so the swap there is even.

MSU vs Mizzou? Slightly tougher I guess but not a huge jump.

The big change is losing Vandy for Bama. No argument there.

The rest of the conference schedule are both on the 2023 and 2024 schedules.

Clemson does make it tougher, but it wouldnt' be different if the OU game hadn't gotten cancelled by the SEC.

Not to mention the conference championship games and playoff games where you are certain to add a couple more games against bowl teams.
