Are you not somewhat surprised/worried that a program of UGA's stature is hiring an unproven assistant coach? I would have thought they would go after a proven HC.
What proven HC (a realistic hire) has the upside to make it worth firing Mark Richt?
UGA is obviously rolling the dice, but it's clearly ready to take a chance.

Not really. Worked out pretty well the last time around. Besides, WHO would we have gone after (realistically) that would have been better? I can only think of Herman, and even that would still be a gamble.
Kirby is the longest-tenured of those assistants under Saban in probably the most high-profile position next to the overlord. Kirby is to Saban what Vader was to the Emperor. Steele, Dooley, etc.....more like Darth Mauls. Fizzled pretty quick, but also weren't near the same caliber disciples.

Pat Haden agrees that hiring the lackeys of a legendary coach is the best strategy ever

Herman's gonna build up that resume and get that Sparty job in a couple years (or sooner) when Dantonio retires

So UGA hires Saban's secretary and it's a home run?
I'm half-joking, but home run??? - pls.
Fuente or Herman would've been great hires because they automatically give you offensive firepower.
Nobody with zero HC experience should be considered a home run. Now could he develop into a home run? Sure. But for now it's a solid double and nothing else.

This.
Some of Saban's assistants have been solid, some have been terrible. No way to know what Smart will be. Him being a great recruiter and having great defenses at Bama means nothing because Saban is deeply involved in both of those and the brand behind him was enormous. Smart is not Saban, not even close.
Maybe Smart is the secret sauce, but there is at least as good of a chance that he is not. First time HC's are always a crapshoot as well, sometimes you get lucky but often times you do not.
As for who would have been a home run? Jimbo Fisher, Chad Kelly, and David Shaw come to mind. All very difficult to pull of course but that's why it is called a "home run". Herman is not a home run. He is a guy who has had 1 good year with someone else's players at UH, that's less impressive than Sumlin before he came to A&M and Sumlin was more of a "Stand up Double" hire.
UGA should be fine because they have a ton of built in advantages but they also have benefitted from UT and UF sucking for the last several years. Hard to say what the future will bring.

Smart is a huge roll of the dice. Georgia could soon be the next, Tennessee, Miami, USC and Michigan.
