Replace 1950 Kentucky with 1950 Tennessee. Both finished with 1 loss, and Tennessee beat Kentucky.

2001 Florida should have gone undefeated. Team was an offensive juggernaut. Lost twice.

Yes, they did...however, UT's 1 loss in 1950 was to a team that finished the year with a losing record while Kentucky beat the AP/UPI #1 ranked (and previously undefeated) Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl. Also, Kentucky was recognized as the sole SEC champion that year (they finished 5-1, UT 4-1)...

Had Sumlin not iced the kicker against UF in his first game in 2012, we would have won that game. Move forward to the end of the season. An 11-1 TAMU would have steamrolled ND in the natty. Frick Notre Dame. They always get so much credit for beating noone.

I agree. That '83 AU team played the toughest schedule by far that year. They were screwed by being obligated to the Sugar Bowl while Miami was not obligated to any bowl; thus the Canes got to sugar-pick their bowl and play the #1 team...sort of similar to what happened to Bama in '77...

The '99 Tennessee team was just as good or better than the BCS winning '98 team. All the future NFL players were playing not to get hurt.

Again, sorry. Tennessee beat Kentucky and then was the only top 5 team to win their bowl game and was named national champions by the majority of selectors.

1. Bertolet didn't miss a field goal or PAT against Florida.
2. A&M didn't score at all in the 2nd half.
If you're talking about the LSU game, in which Bertolet missed a PAT and 2 field goals (including a 33-yarder after a 75-yard KO return) and we lost by 5, that's a different argument.

1. Sumlin iced the UF kicker, he missed. Made the 2nd one.
2. That's fine. Still lost by 2.

Under Bama rules we did win the 1984 title (hell under Bama rules we might have won the 1995 and 2009 titles as well).

The most recognized polls of the time, the AP and UPI, both chose champions before the bowl games and OU was their champ. And if you go to the NCAA website, they only have 1 champion listed for 1950 and it's OU. Even if you also include other selectors in '50, 6 chose OU, 6 chose UT, 2 chose Princeton, and 1 chose UK...that's hardly a majority...
Not to mention that you cherry-picked the rankings...UK was just outside the top 5 (at #6) that year goin' into the bowls before they whupped OU...but you already knew that...

Exactly and Tennessee won one more game than OU. Tennessee definitely has a legitimate claim to 1950.

I think OldPete is correct. I know that OU only counts its' AP,UPI and BCS championships.
The landscape was different in 1950, bowl games hadn't become the determiners yet in that the final poll was released before they were played.
I didn't know Tennessee claimed 1950. I know they won it in 1951.
A couple of sidenotes. The UK team that beat OU was coached by Bear Bryant. In 1949 OU went 11-0 beating LSU 35-0 in the Sugar Bowl to cap the season. We didn't get the nod however and we don't claim that season. OU also went undefeated in 1954 during "the streak" and did not win the national title nor do we claim it.
I've looked it up and OU could claim 16 National Championships, but only claims 7. The "others" I suppose are by lesser recognized or respected authorities. I guess all I'm really saying is is that some minor selector or group of writers calling a team the national champion isn't really the same thing.
Anyhow interesting to know that Tennessee claims 1950, I learned something new.

Yeah we claim six. I don't feel 1940 and 1967 are legitimate claims though.

I wasn't saying y'all didn't have a legitimate claim...I was initially just telling the OP why I had UK as one of best SEC teams to not win an NC...then I was responding to your "majority" claim. Heck, as long as we still claim 1941, I won't be telling anyone else what they can or can't claim...

In '51, just like in '50 with OU, UT went undefeated and was named national champion by both polls and then lost their bowl game to an undefeated Maryland team...ironically, the same thing would happen to Maryland in '53...
