By this line of thinking, basketball teams that make the tournament as an at-large selection by the committee and win the tournament did not "win" the national title. They were, after all, selected/voted by a committee to play in the national title tournament.

Rose bowl winning team = lol.

We already have a classless program who went backwards and claimed five not originally awarded to them. Don't stoop to their level!

You can claim what you want... Ole Miss, TAMU, UGA, of course Bama, all claim or acknowledge certain NC. Auburn has considered it, but I think for now we have let it die...

BTW - using this list, Bama can claim 14 legit NC... 1941 was and will always be a joke... So Bama fan, unless you drop that one, do not make fun of others...

It still baffles me how the greatest southern football program in history just started "claiming" 5 national championships because their preacher-SID during the Perkins era decided to add them. I've always thought it was beneath the program but I guess not.

While our 1941 title claim is horrendous there is a big difference between the year 1941 and the year 1956 in college football. While the AP poll had been established in '41, it had not yet reached the prestige level it enjoys today. That wouldn't happen until after WWII. By 1956, however, the AP and Coaches Polls had been firmly established as the gold standard for awarding college football national championships.

You don't claim titles because of who you played or beat, you claim them based on the credentials of the titles you won.
