OP, can you tell me how VOLS attendance went for this entire season. I'm curious to see this

New Orleans is a great town to win in and lousy if you lose. It is a dreadful place to have a game on Monday, Jan. 2.

Reminds me of when the vols couldn't fill up the stadium in Nashville for their home opener in 2015. Capacity 69,143

Teams with losing records have rendered the games meaningless.
Oprah is out there handing out bowl games like they are new cars. You're right though that they are just glorified exhibition games at this point.

How much did they mean before the playoffs?
If you've ever heard the old adage "if everybody's invited, nobody's invited", I think that applies here. They've created a playoff AND added more bowl games. At some point, being invited to a bowl is an expectation rather than a delight. It's just another way to get into your wallet and it obviously has taken a huge toll on attendance.
The only way I would attend a bowl game anymore is if AU was in the playoff, or if I liked the city where AU was playing and it was convenient to see friends or family, or I was going there anyway traveling on business. Even then, there is no way I'd buy tickets at full price. I heard from some of my AU friends in NOLA that you could get in the game for $10 a ticket in some places.

People always respond "Well the bowls were meaningless before the playoffs!"
but the issue is that the existence of the playoff has drastically changed the public perception of the non-playoff bowls.
There's a way overemphasis on the playoffs in the media to the point nobody cares about anything else now.
It also doesn't help that bowl organizers don't seem to give a damn about attendance, overly expensive tickets and bad start dates/times, etc.

Quit playing these games on Monday, we're killing college football.
exactly. the Monday before the day nearly the whole population would go back to work is a shitty night to have a game like that in a destination city. another 20k people go to the game if it is on Saturday and not at 7:30 at night.

nice try at excusing the Barn faithful's shitty attendance in the Sugar.

I would be surprised if it was that many. I was there and I estimated about 10,000 max. I tried counting them but some people kept moving.
Instead of a "guess the attendance" contest, they should have asked us to name them.
No excuses, but its just hard to get fired up about a game at 11:00 a.m on December 26th, after your team finished the season 5-7. I only went because I had a free place to stay, and I couldn't find anyone else willing to change their Christmas plans to travel down there.

no chance. better food, music, mardi gras, 24 hour liquor stores, warmer climate, going out in NO> going out in nashville.

Expanding the playoffs to an 8 team field would remedy the situation somewhat. It really has a lot to do with times of the games and match-ups. The Rose Bowl seems to always pack the house as well.

I think we all know who played in the 2 most well attended bowls. :)
Music City Bowl was home game for UT... like Sugar Bowl to LSU.
On a side note, I was wondering how many people attended the Cotton Bowl. Two teams from Mich/Wisc going all the way to Dallas to play... made no sense.

No one is going to lose money on it. ESPN owns almost all of these bowls, so its their money, and what they spend to put these bowls on, they will get back from ads. It doesnt matter if its East Carolina vs North Texas in Idaho at noon on a Wednesday, ESPN will make money because they will get a heck of a lot better ratings for it than they would if they replayed First Take or the Crossfit Championships, and that turns into added buys from advertisers.

Didn't Vol fans empty the stadium during the Mizzou game when they found out they lost the East?

ESPN basically owns the bowls. The 4 letter network is interested in filling programming hours and audience. The bowls' desire is filling seats and bring revenue to the host cities. Clearly the bowls and host cities are losing. It will be interesting if the analogy turns out to be the frog in hot water. Will they figure this out too late?
