Team Speed Kills

Something I thought worthy of noting: In 2007, Arkansas was ranked #24 in the AP poll pre-season. At the time Houston Nutt left, Arkansas was 8-4 and ranked #24 in the AP poll.

How do you beat LSU on the road but lose to Kentucky by double digits at home?

I know Kentucky was decent that year...heck we lost to them. But Arkansas lost by 13 pts., in Fayetteville. Then they go on to beat the #1 team in the country?

I don't get it.

ETA: Then they went and got blown the frick out in the Cotton Bowl against Missouri.

How do you beat ULM and Western Illinois in the final minute. Turn around beat Auburn, then lose to State (giving up 31 points) then beat LSU. Maybe it's arkansas talent instead of coaching.

In a game that Nutt didn't coach in, and McFadden and Jones almost boycotted.

The fact that you started this thread is proof that you're worried.

The fact that I started this thread was to prove all the fans who stated this myth as fact over and over again, that they were wrong.

No QB and No Defense.
Having all of your talent in one place does you little to no good.

I will admit that Houston Nutt deserves most of the blame for this lack of talent, however Arkansas does have a weak recruiting base.
A great coach can overcome this (petrino probably will). Houston Nutt isn't a great coach. But to say that he isn't an above average coach is ignorant.

A decent point. But they had a heck of an oline and a heck of a backfield. They had a pretty good WR in Marcus Monk and one of the best freshmen TE in the game. I will also point out that Nutt did, in fact, have a pretty good QB at his disposal and chose not to use him.

They also had a few good defensive players as well. See the All-SEC team list. Its not like were that bad.

They finished the season ranked #9 in the SEC in scoring defense. While that seems pretty bad, please note that Florida finished #8, and Arkansas only allowed an average of 1 pt. per game more than the Gators. They finished one spot ahead of Tennessee, the Eastern Division champs.

They ranked 6 in passing D, and 8 in rushing D.

In short, their defense often played well enough to win many games. Seems like the talent was there.

Florida was shitty. They gave up 27 points to the worst scoring offense in the SEC that year (Ole Miss.) Saying that you're one worse than that is not impressive at all.

I love this stretch...

Preseason Postseason Rank

Arkansas 2005
NR - NR

Arkansas 2004
NR - NR

Arkansas 2003
NR - NR

Arkansas 2002
NR - NR

Arkansas 2001
NR - NR

Arkansas 2000
NR - NR

But yeah, it was likely our talent and not the coach. Neither go hand in hand afterall.

No prob.
Arkansas is on the rise.
We lose a lot of expereince after this year, and we need a good recruiting class to offset that. Most likely we're going back to being a 6-6, 7-5 team like we were before Orgeron got here.

If we can make some magic happen this year, we might be able to stay near the top long term. We've got to make it to Atlanta, though.

The point is that Florida and Tennessee had similar production but nobody calls them "untalented."

Arkansas had one All-SEC caliber player at each level of their defense that year.
