It's not about that. Kids want to at least be under the allusion that their time at the school will be stable. Most are out of state kids, not born and raised Gamecocks. Maybe if they stayed committed, played for Spurrier for two years, and then fell in love with the school through that process, it wouldn't matter who their next coach was. But as a 17 or 18 year old from NC or FL and the coach says he is leaving.. that is a lot of uncertainty.

Ouch. He should've said at least 4 more years but hindsight is 20/20 and he likely wasn't thinking along the lines of what might happen w/recruits.

I was there, in the Liberty Bowl, Bud Dudley gave me the tickets, along with some other members of my unit, right before we deployed to Europe.
I remember exactly where I was, the mountain I was on, the moment I heard The Bear had died over a PRC77.
Y'all were after the old man since the moment he lost the Cotton Bowl the year before ... Bama fans everywhere wanted him out. And he made your program, y'all were "just Alabama" until The Bear came along. Rumor was at the time that the REC had poisoned him after the Auburn, Tennessee and LSU winning streaks came to an end. But it was the loss to who, Southern Miss, when y'all quite poisoning the food and starting main-lining his injections.

I will say this and be done. As SC fans we have been through this once and now that The OBC has let us taste winning we dont want to fall back there.
We love what he has done for us as a program, just cannot bear to see him go out like Dr. Lou. In the SEC you cannot say what he did and get away with it unless its at a school like BAMA or LSU. We are not there and will never be there, that is why we are upset.
We have heard changes will be made on the staff from insiders and those coaches in question are sill recruiting for us that makes zero sense.
When Mark Fields told his recruiter he decommitted our coach just said " I understand, just call us back if you want back on board." He did that without putting up a fight according to Fields. How would most programs feel about that.

It’s a business, every coach has had this conversation. I know for a fact UGA coaches have responded the same way Coach Brown did. Saban probably says, frick you, we’re Alabama when a recruit jump ships. Les Miles tells the nation a recruit doesn’t have the chest to play in the SEC. Every coach has their own spin, but you won’t see them begging. I’m sure this didn’t come as a surprise to SCAR with his decision. That little shite in Clemson has been chirping in his ear for months now.

USC does not "owe" Spurrier anything. They have paid him tens of millions over the last decade and stayed patient with him while he was trying to build the program the first 5 years. If Spurrier is actually telling recruits he will only be there another couple years, he needs to retire now. If he is already so sapped of enthusiasm for the job that he wants to quit in 2 years, quit now. He does not need the money. Why drag it out two more years and implode the program?
Call me crazy but I'm convinced his ego is so big that he wants USC to fail after he retires. He publicly enjoyed watching Florida struggle without him and he will do the same with USC. He can't handle the possibility of someone being better than him at "his" program. That's why he went to USC in the first place....to be the only winner a school has ever had.
USC is now a top 25 job with great facilities and recruiting base. If Spurrier is mentally checked out of this job, fire his arse and hire one of the dozens of quality coaches who would beg for the job.

Garbage. He announced his retirement before the 1982 football season and actually retired after the Liberty Bowl. I was a student at the law school when he died, and there was never any discussion, the year before included, about wanting him out.

The weird thing is now he's saying 4-5 more years again. So was he being honest with the 2-3 years or the 4-5 years? Just a bad move imo.

I thought he walked back those comments. I was listening to the interview about the upcoming bowl (he used the wrong name) and he said he was back on the 4-5 year plan.

Spurrier back on the 4-5 plan. He said so yesterday. Hopefully it will stop the bleeding and possibly get some guys to recommit.

I still think he just spoke from the hip after a disappointing season. If things pick up, I am sure he will be talking more and more about staying 4 or 5 years.
