It was blatant. Murray floated toward the play and got hit. Hate it for him. Maybe he should have floated to his sideline. Or wore a yellow jersey that signifies he couldn't be hit. Otherwise, he got what he got. Clean hit.

You may be right
I'm honestly not being biased here and may be wrong. Maybe I'm just a dumbass.

Dial led with his shoulder and its not even debate able. Was it dirty? Maybe, but definately legal.

It's only not obvious to Alabama fans

quote:was incidental, leads with his shoulder first and the helmet contact is secondary. they only real possible penalty would maybe be unnecessary roughness, but murray was within range of the runner and moving to intercept, so he was fair game
Dude look at the crown of his helmet smash Murray's facemask.

So did the Ohio state WR on Saturday, still got ejected for targeting

There's nothing to discuss. Dial led with the shoulder. The helmets contacting is incidental to that fact, but there's no real debate that the shoulder was intended to be the initial point of contact. Murray was not a "defenseless" player, nor was he acting as quarterback at the time. He was a legitimate target with a legitimate right to tackle the person with the ball. It wouldn't be anything resembling "targeting" by current standards, let alone back then. It was a hard block against a legitimate target while the ball was still live. Anyone who doesn't know that needs to brush up on their football rules, because that's as clear-cut as it comes.

Ray initiates contact in the chest. Was the ejection confirmed or did the call on the field stand?

KEY ELEMENTS Target—to take aim at an opponent for purposes of attacking with an apparent intent that goes beyond making a legal tackle or a legal block or playing the ball. Crown of the Helmet—the top portion of the helmet. Contact to the head or neck area—not only with the helmet, but also with the forearm, fist, elbow, or shoulder—these can all lead to a foul. Defenseless player—a player not in position to defend himself. Examples (Rule 2-27-14): A player in the act of or just after throwing a pass. A receiver attempting to catch a pass, or one who has completed a catch and has not had time to protect himself or has not clearly become a ball carrier. A kicker in the act of or just after kicking a ball, or during the kick or the return. A kick returner attempting to catch or recover a kick. A player on the ground. A player obviously out of the play. A player who receives a blind-side block. A ball carrier already in the grasp of an opponent and whose forward progress has been stopped.
yep, murray not defenseless player. sims was the definition of a defenseless player on that hit.

I don't think Ray should have been ejected. I hate what football has become.

quote:yeah. its been weakened for sure. 80% of what defeses did 10 years ago is a penalty now and most of the great hard-hitting safeties of the past would get ejected from every modern game. Its part of the reason why offensive production has exploded, the defense is handcuffed

Dial was blocking a defender on the interception return, not going after a defenseless player.
Targeting....know the rules.

maybe I'm blind but that looks like a textbook block. the fact that it's a qb is irrelevant.
you are blind and dumb...textbook targeting...key word being defenseless and yes he would have been ejected for that now

Do they or have they ever called targeting on a block?
Posted on 12/8/14 at 1:10 pm to justausedcarguy
quote:Not in todays rules. 100% targeting, easy call. Look up the uk block against Lsu and Ohio st vs wisconsin. If helmets touch after a blindside block you gone.
