re: Texas A&M fans - why is there so much emphasis on being an alumnus to be a fan?

t-shirt fans talking smack about your team is one thing.

t-shirt sips who talk smack about the school as a whole, using outdated/incorrect/ignorant information, making bonfire jokes, cussing at your family and children, etc. are the ones that we're talking about.

Yeah, it's the guys making "dumb aggie" jokes that have never set foot on a college campus. I don't have a beef with t-shirt fans. Just check the academic smack at the door. I am stuck with my school, thick and thin. I busted arse to earn this Aggie ring and the sheepskin on the wall. A t-shirt fan just went down to walmart and paid $10.

I knew a bunch of young guys 22-25 year olds, from MIT ,working in the SF Bay area, who used to go to the San Jose State game few times every season. One of the guy's girlfriend was in San Jose State and besides the tickets were sponsored and it was not a bad way to spend a half day.

It was funny when before or after the game , the opponent's fans , invariably started talking academic smack, they would tolerate it for 5 minutes and then crush them like Conan

Let that be a lesson to aggies - even in their precious , prestigious AAU - there are 50 schools better than them and you never know who is behind that t-shirt

We usually don't really run academic smack on other Universities. (I should note that Texas Tech and Baylor are not universities.)

It is funny to hear the "we" in reference to the t-shirt team. That's about all.

If that's the case, how come only ring holders are listed in the AFS database?

The AFS keeps a database as a service and as a fundraising tool. I'd assume those who stayed long enough to get their Aggie Ring are more likely to donate, but honestly I'd have to ask someone at the Association to be sure.

The term "t-sip", short for "tea sipper", originated in the 1940's to refer to Texas students, because while a large portion of our students were serving in WWII, including our football team, the sophisticated Texas students were sitting around sipping tea in Austin.

wow

that is about as homosexual as the male cheerleaders

PLEASE... find a new insult for the Longhorns, one that doesn't reference a lame inside joke from 1941. I feel embarrassed for you aggies... AGAIN

With that said, if you attended Sam Houston, SFA, UNT, Texas State, etc., its stupid to talk shite on behalf of a school you were too stupid to attend.

I did my MA at Texas State, and considering the program in which I'm doing a Ph.D. along with the rather choice fellowship, I think it turned out just fine. I also had classes with several A&M grads who were great guys that might find your blanket generalization of Texas State students a bit unfortunate coming from a fellow Aggie.

But maybe more to the point, in the 3 years I spent at Texas State, including 2 1/2 as an instructor, I probably can count on one hand the number of students and peers that didn't look at A&M as Texas' little sister or even wanted to go to school there. Is A&M a better rated school than Texas State? Indeed, but most of the undergrads at Texas State who wanted to go somewhere else wanted to go to Texas, not A&M. College Station or 30 mins south of Austin? A lot of them did the math and picked not living in Texas's version of Starkville over rings ceremonies, yell leaders, and an obsession with all things UTexas.

I understand why A&M is appealing to some people. However, what I think is amazing is how difficult it is for some Aggies to understand why most of us would rather vacation in hell than spend four years in College Station.

Texas A&M doesn't have a lot of T shirt fans because the general population in Texas doesn't follow college football that close unless they are a graduate of a particular university. I moved here 20 years ago from Alabama and remember being very disappointed trying to start water cooler conversations about the past weekend's games. People couldn't even tell me who Texas had played the previous Saturday, much less who A&M played. The local ABC network station would regularly black out college football games in favor of showing a local high school scholastics competition. I remember the local news station doing a poll in the early 90's asking what everyone's favorite type of football was. High School and NFL were split about evenly with college football getting only about 5% of the vote. Texas winning the national championship a few years ago has changed a lot of that. So really the only T shirt fans in this state are those that started following the Longhorns and college football after Texas became competitive again.
